  • On the banks of the Magol River: fish for carp, perch and barbel
  • Vaalwater setting for stays and overnights on the way to Botswana
  • Playground, braai facilities, bar, large lawns and a tractor museum
Bask on the banks of the Magol River at Rivier-Oord Vaalwater, in South Africa’s Limpopo province five kilometres outside Vaalwater on the Thabazimbi Road. Although it’s in a quiet location, its setting close to the R517 makes this a handy stopover for a night or more on the way to Botswana or further afield. ‘More’ is the key word here: once you find out about the activities available, including fishing for carp, perch and barbel in the river, you’ll likely want to linger for a little longer in the area. Thrill-seeking pursuits including hot-air ballooning, game drives, ziplining and paintballing are also nearby, and the resort has a playground to amuse the kids, roomy lawns (and a bar) to fill idle hours for grownups, and braai facilities to ensure all ages are fully fed. There’s also a tractor museum with several vintage vehicles (perhaps not the South African holiday photo you were expecting…) For travel snaps more typically associated with SA, grab the camera and get over to Jugomaro Predator Park, 10 minutes' drive away, to see the big cats being fed (mid-afternoons every day except Wednesdays); for the chance to witness animals in their natural habitat, including the sought-after Big Five (that's your lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants and Cape buffalos), Vier-en-Twintig Riviere Game Reserve is 15 minutes’ drive. Rivier-Oord Vaalwater has showers, toilets, wifi and a washing-up area. Barbecues and campfires are allowed.

Local attractions

If you’re having a hol in South Africa mainly to amble with the animals, head to Marakele National Park (a 45-minute drive away) in the middle of the Waterberg Mountains, a wildlife-filled setting sandwiched amid the arid western and wetter eastern parts of the country, to keep an eye out for cheetah, brown hyena and aardvarks, along with 300 different types of birds and, of course, the Big Five. And it's not just about the critters: Welgevonden (15 minutes) is a stunningly scenic area with grasslands, savannahs, wood-covered mountains and rock ravines ripe for exploring, as well as ancient Bushman rock art to help you add a cultural twist to your safari. Other geological expeditions are be had at the Makapan’s Caves in Mokopane (an hour and a half away), while South African city times are over in one of the nation's three capitals, Pretoria (two hours and 10 minutes), or in Johannesburg (two hours and 50 minutes). Gaborone in Botswana is about a four-hour drive from the park.
