  • Well-maintained, peaceful site five minutes' drive from Graskop
  • A short walk from Graskop Gorge glass lift, zipline and Big Swing
  • Stunning Lowveld views from the pool, hiking trail and restaurant
You want a view? You’ll certainly get a very fine one at Panorama Chalets and Rest Camp, in an elevated spot on the edge of Graskop Gorge five minutes’ drive from the small town of Graskop – and you can get to it really rather easily, as the Mpumalanga site’s handy location is just off the R533. It’s not just the one view that you’ll be able to see from here – there’s spectacular scenery all around here, and the site’s facilities have all been set up to help guests look out over the Lowveld backdrop as much as possible. The open-air pool looks out over the view, as does the restaurant, which serves up breakfast, light meals and dinners, and can sort picnic baskets for your outings if you’d like to see it all from a different angle. Setting out to get those different views might include taking a walk on the site’s hiking trail, walking a few minutes to get to the Graskop Gorge glass lift, Big Swing and (gulp) gorge zipline, or driving for 10 minutes or so to natural features such as God's Window, Pinnacle Rock and Lisbon Falls. While the outlook is truly excellent, you may find that everyday tasks need to be tackled too – for those, the site has a launderette, a camp kitchen, a covered braai area, clean bathrooms and a small shop stocked with cool drinks and ice creams. A TV/pool room provides the entertainment once the sun’s gone down, and a security guard is on patrol throughout the night to ensure safe slumbers for all guests.

Local attractions

Assess your own appetite for adventure and then head for the Graskop Gorge viewing area, five minutes’ walk away. Glide 51 metres down into the gorge in the glass lift, walk along elevated walkways and bridges or get adrenaline rushing on the Big Swing or the 80-metre zipline. Beyond this, there are lots of hiking trails from Graskop, and activity centres in town can sort days of abseiling, horse riding and rafting for more adventure. The Long Tom mountain toboggan is 45 minutes away for those who fancy hurtling downhill at high speed. Charge up the camera and head out to snap pics of some of the area’s finest natural views – Wonder View, God's Window, Pinnacle Rock and the Berlin and Lisbon Falls are all within a 15-minute drive, and Bourke's Luck Potholes are half an hour away. If you’ve got more time on your hands (and the patience to await the arrival of the big beasts), enter the Kruger National Park via the Phabeni Gate (45 minutes).
