  • Peaceful site in Djerdap National Park 400 metres from the Danube
  • A 15-minute drive from Golubac Fortress and 20 from Lepenski Vir
  • Summer kitchen and barbecue, plus boat tours on the river available
Swerve ever so slightly off the EuroVelo 6 route and into Camping Asin for a break when you’re on a biking trip in south eastern Europe: this site for cyclists is a swell spot for a stopover in Serbia. It’s also right by the bike trails of Djerdap National Park in a pretty setting near the Danube’s right bank and just across the river from Romania if you’re country hopping, as you certainly should in these scenic parts… Make the most of the national park in Braničevo first though, for roams around its 100-kilometre stretch from the gorgeous riverside Golubac Fortress to a dam near Novi Slip in the east across a forested mountain area reaching between 50 to 800 metres above sea level. Many marked walking paths are near the site if you’re up for ditching your wheels for a day or two and tramping while keeping a lookout for birds like European honey buzzards and turtle doves. Or do you fancy swapping cycling for sports on the water? Fishing and kayaking are popular on the Danube in this national park and those who are into their history can trace the river towards the Mesolithic Lepenski Vir archaeological site (20 minutes’ drive) or take a boat tour stopping off at the handsome village of Tekija in the Iron Gates gorge below the Miroč mountain. Trajan's Plaque, a Roman memorial, and the Diana Fortress are also around this area about an hour and 20 minutes’ drive away. When reverting to the park after adventurous days on the river, rinse off in the shower cabins and prep meals in the covered summer kitchen (with washing-up facilities) or fix food alfresco using the handy barbecue setup.

Local attractions

The Tuman Monastery is one of the rare sights in this area that isn’t on the river and is about 30 minutes’ drive away. Visit this 14th-century Serbian Orthodox structure to see its striped facade and small zoo before trying some local dishes in the pub. Another inland place to keep you busy is Rajko's Cave (guided tours available), known as the ‘White Beauty’ near the copper and gold mines of Majdanpek about an hour’s drive from the park. Back at the river, one of the main sights to behold is Golubac Fortress (15 minutes away), a well-preserved walled town dating back to the Middle Ages; continue to Srebrno Jezero (Silver Lake) about 50 minutes altogether from the park for dips afterwards.
