How does a hol bodyboarding at the beach, fishing at a dam, wandering around a nature reserve and mountain biking on terrific trails sound? Like a total fantasy? Not so with a stay at Parque de Campismo de São Torpes, a site squidged in between Sines and Porto Covo in Portugal’s spectacular south-western Alentejo area. When bedding down here, it’s about a 15-minute drive to both those aforementioned settlements, but the local beaches are closer by – the scenic and sandy stretch of São Torpes, for example, takes around 10 minutes to reach by car, or you can walk to Praia de Morgavel in about 15 minutes. If the fact this site is in the middle of a nature reserve makes you wonder where you’ll source food from, the answer is that you can mosey over to Sines (10 minutes' drive) to test the Portuguese cuisine on offer at this well-known foodie hub. Let off a little more steam while strolling around the surrounding Costa Vicentina Natural Park, try a bit of sport fishing at the Morgavel dam (10 minutes), mountain bike on the region’s various trails, or bodyboard at Morgavel beach – there are plenty of pursuits to pick from in this wildlife-rich region.

Local attractions

Praia de São Torpes (10 minutes’ drive) is one of the best beaches in the area because of its wide, sandy coastline. It’s also a smart spot to pick if you fancy having a go at surfing – wave riders from all over Portugal head here when the swell’s working. If you begin to tire of this spot, simply pick up your towel and head to another as there are at least eight beaches to check out within a short drive of the site. Fancy some town times in between all that basking on the sand? Head to Sines and soak up the laidback atmosphere in this former fishing village, a pretty place with a mini marina and a well-regarded arts centre. But the main reason to flock here is for the food – try all the traditional Portuguese fodder you can muster, saving space in your stomach for the seafood in particular. For wildlife watching, lope to the Lagoa de Santo André lagoon up the coast (half an hour) and keep your eyes peeled for birds. Alternatively, guarantee a glimpse of more exotic creatures at Badoca Safari Park, an outdoor zoo with animal-feeding sessions.
