  • Peaceful adults-only farm site 15 minutes’ drive from Amarante
  • Less than an hour's drive from Porto and Guimarães
  • Well-kept gardens with mountain views and next to a forest
Hoping to head back from your hols with tales of peace and quiet, telling folk how you managed a mix of country stays and city strolls? Source the material for such a script with a stay at Land Story, a relaxed rural site on a farm on the edge of the village of Aldeia and 15 minutes’ drive from Amarante. The story here is indeed one of the land – the forest, mountains, orchards and vineyards that surround the site, as well as the gorgeous gardens within the gates. Walks and bike rides are fine ways to get out and see a good chunk of it, but it's equally rewarding to settle right there, open a bottle of something (ideally something from the surrounding Douro valley) and grill your dinner among these views and/or sunsets. Life on site moves at a pretty peaceful pace, partly due to the absence of anyone under the age of 18 (sorry, kids – grownups just need their own space sometimes). A lengthy list of facilities wouldn't really fit that vibe, of course, so the folk here have instead focused on kitting the place with all the essentials: a launderette, washing-up area, showers and a free wifi service (so you can start sharing your stories with the world…) And what of those city outings? Well, they might take you to potter around Porto, Guimarães or Braga, all of which involve less than an hour on the motorway... or take the train from the nearby station to Porto, for a comfy, cool and cheap journey into the city in an hour.

Liked: Views were scenic.

Disliked: The site was very tricky to find and get into, it would be ok for car or camper but not for caravans or larger motor homes. There was noise from dogs all night from all around the village. We rang the owner a couple of times for assistance but he was unhelpful.we were booked and paid for 4 nights but only stayed for one due to lack of sleep from noise and the inability for the owner to answer our phone calls which we felt was extremely inconsiderate. We would not recommend this site to anyone.

From the manager: Lamento o seu comentário.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Communal kitchen, friendly host, nice view

Disliked: Semi wild dogs and cats (the owners?) running around campsite begging for food. Dog poo in the middle of campsites and on paths. Only two bathrooms for the site so had to queue in the morning.

From the manager: By your comment it is clear that you do not like dogs. ours are small and friendly, not wild (!!!!!?????)they don't ask for food, they might just want to play and cuddle. He criticizes the existence of “only” two bathrooms!… And queues. …this is so ridiculous. When he was here there were a total of 8/10 people camped. Wanted 10 bathrooms? Sorry, this is a rural campsite. Not the Ritz.

Nice quiet view with small but clean senatory areas. Understanding owner.…

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: The location of this campsite is fantastic. Close enough to town to get supplies and visit the sites, but isolated enough to feel as if you are still in nature. The host kindly let us check in early, so we could have a full day to get settled and explore our surroundings.

Disliked: The neighbours' dogs liked to bark from early in the morning until late at night.

Local attractions

Not content viewing the mountains from afar? Set off to the Serra do Marão, 45 minutes’ drive east, to clamber among the granite peaks. Rather flatter (thankfully) is the excellent Tâmega eco-route, a 35-kilometre bike path running along the route of a disused railway line from Amarante and taking in vineyard, forest and river views along the way. Close-ups of those Tâmega river views can be had on a cruise or canoe trip from Amarante (15 minutes), or while putting your way around the town's scenic golf course. If it was the vineyard views that took your fancy, head south for 45 minutes or so to sip vinho verde at the wineries along the banks of the Douro river. More sipping is in store at the famed port cellars of Porto (50 minutes' drive), but don't get so tipsy that you miss a wander around the colourful Cais da Ribeira area and getting an eyeful of the Eiffel-designed bridge. There’s a splendid selection of old buildings to see here too, as there are in Guimarães (45 minutes) and the ancient city of Braga (an hour).
