  • Among the stunning scenery of a Madeira valley and mountains
  • Peaceful setting 10 minutes’ drive from the coast at Quebramar
  • Pick your own fruit and veg from the colourful trees and gardens
Grannies, granddads, mums, dads and kids… whatever your age or holiday bucket list, you’ll surely like a stay at Granny’s Farm, hidden in a valley on the Madeira archipelago. Island stays are generally guaranteed to be pretty peaceful, and this is most certainly the case here: Granny’s Farm is in a quiet – and spectacularly scenic – setting with views of the surrounding mountains and the waterfalls and woodland of the Levada Fajã do Rodrigues path. More wanders through stunning scenery are 15 minutes' drive away, at the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva of Madeira forest, the biggest and oldest laurel forest in Madeira, the Canary Islands and the Azores. Granny’s Farm is on the main island of the Madeira archipelago’s four, under 10 minutes’ drive from the coast at Quebramar and 35 from Madeira capital Funchal. It’s a stellar spot too for days at base, with loads of handsome space to laze about in, free wifi, a green garden filled with colourful flowers, and a well-maintained communal barbecue area for prepping meals without stepping off site. The farm has showers, toilets, a washing-up area and a launderette. Guests are welcome to pick as much produce as they like from the farm fruit trees and vegetable garden.

Local attractions

Set off on the 3.9 kilometres of the Levada Fajã do Rodrigues or Levada Fajã da Ama from Ginjas five minutes’ walk away, for a scenic hike in a woodland and wildlife haven, past waterfalls and lagoons on the way to Ribeira do Inferno. Part of the path goes through a tunnel under a mountain too, so bring a hard hat and a torch (along with daydreams of entering the dwarfish domain of Moria…). Any hol in this part of Madeira needs to include more woodland walks at the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva of Madeira forest, a serene spot of laurel and mahogany trees that’s been around for over 20 million years. You could spend weeks wandering around here, but top picks are the misty forest around Chão dos Louros (15 minutes’ drive), and the valley, forest and centenarian trees around Paúl da Serra (25 minutes). Delve into all things Laurisilva 35 minutes’ south at the Madeira Botanical Gardens just outside Funchal, to see several species of trees native to the forest as well as many species of local wildlife around the gardens and its museum.
