  • Handcrafted shepherd's hut in subtropical gardens with valley views
  • 10 minutes' drive from historic Silves; 25 minutes from beaches
  • Kitchenette, wood-fired oven, holistic treatments and outdoor bath
Valley views and a very generous dose of peace and quiet – glamping site Colina Tranquila Algarve is a splendid choice for those seeking serenity. There’s heaps of space at this site 10 minutes’ drive from Silves, and with only a few folks around the place you’re likely to have much of it to yourselves while staying in your handcrafted shepherd’s hut. And what a fab hut it is too – it’s been fully insulated and kitted out with a comfy double bed, kitchenette, heating, wifi connection and a bathroom with eco toilet and solar-powered shower. Your domain doesn’t end at the door though: there’s also a gorgeous outdoor bath for scenic views with added bubbles, and a miniature chapel in which you can eat, escape the sun or just chill out. Directly outside the hut is an outdoor table and chairs looking out over the valley. Wander a little further through the subtropical gardens to find the wood-fired oven (for pizzas or fish smoking) or follow the maze-like path to the ruin known as the ‘little castle’ (a top spot for sunset views). If lazing's on the agenda, claim a spot in a hammock instead. Holistic treatments are available upon request for guests who need a helping hand to relax. Those who’d prefer to get active can hike around the Barragem do Arade reservoir, 15 minutes away, or take a wander around the historic town centre of Silves (also a handy place to shop for food, find restaurants and sip remarkably strong coffees).

Local attractions

You’ll no doubt be swinging by Silves at some point – for food supplies if nothing else. Don’t shoot through too quickly though, for there’s much to see on a foray around the fortified town, including a castle, cathedral, archaeology museum and the Porte Romana bridge (actually from the 15th century, but on the site of the original Roman river crossing). There are plenty of rural outings to be had in the hills and valleys around town: horse riding is 10 minutes away by car, and there are walking trails around Barragem do Arade reservoir (15 minutes). And if you (correctly) surmise that a bottle of something local would make splendid sunset sipping, you’ll want to seek out a couple of nearby wineries. Quinta do Francês and Quinta Dos Vales are both about half an hour away for quality tipples. Noted the word Algarve in the site name? The beaches of the famed coast are 25 minutes away by car – Armação de Pêra and Carvalho are good places to start. For those who want to get further out to sea, Ferragudo (half an hour) is the place for whale-watching boat trips and sea kayaking.
