  • Peaceful secure family site on the banks of the Zambezi river
  • Less than three hours’ drive from the spectacular Victoria Falls
  • Birdwatching paradise: spot kingfishers, owls, hoopoos and more
Spectacular African sunsets, peaceful riverbanks and 24-hour security to set your mind at ease… If that describes your dream hols, make your way to Namwi Island Lodge, a family-friendly site less than 20 minutes’ drive from the city of Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi region of northern Namibia. The site is on the banks of the mighty Zambezi river, so there are plenty of water-based activities nearby to keep you thoroughly entertained: sign up for fishing trips, boat tours and sunset cruises, or stick to the site for fishing from the river bank and dips in the pool. Not really up for a watery getaway? Stay on dry land with a trip into Katima Mulilo for a stroll around, stocking up on supplies and trying some of the local cuisine. If you’d prefer to look after yourself for munch, get the braai stoked up (there’s a private one with every pitch, and you can nab ice, braai packs and wood at the small kiosk). Once you’ve eaten your fill – or even if you simply want a chilled day on site – kick back and tilt your eyes to the skies. Namwi Island is a top spot for birdwatching, so keep a weather (should that be feather?) eye out for kingfishers, woodowls and hoopoos among many others.

Local attractions

If it’s a nature-filled getaway you’re after, you won’t go wrong here: the Salambala Conservancy (a project to re-establish populations of elephants, zebra and impala in the area) is about half an hour’s drive away and, if you’re up for a longer trip, the lions, elephants and antelope of Bwabwata and Mudumu national parks are within two hours. A little closer to home base, make tracks for Chobe National Park over the border in Botswana. Chobe is a top safari destination, so sign up for a day’s adventuring and keep your eyes peeled for elephants, buffalo, lions and cheetahs, or stick around after dark to spot leopards and hyenas. You can’t stay on the Zambezi and not make the trek to the stunning Victoria Falls (at three hours, it’s a bit of a jaunt, but you won’t regret the journey). After gazing at the largest falls in the world, don’t be in a hurry to leave – be brave at the Devil’s Pool, go skydiving, bungee jumping or whitewater rafting, then treat yourself to a classy evening meal aboard the Royal Livingstone Express steam train. Lucky enough to have time left over for an onward journey? You’re well-placed here for forays into Zambia (20 minutes), Botswana (45 minutes) and Zimbabwe (an hour 50 minutes), or you can head further into Namibia through the Caprivi Strip.
