  • On a working farm surrounded by olive groves, orchards and pastures
  • Between the Chianti wine region and the Maremma coastline
  • Restaurant dishes made using only seasonal homegrown produce
Vistas out across sheep fields and stables, orchard fields and olive groves, vegetable gardens and dairy pastures... this spectacular working farm site is set among greenly scenic Tuscan hills, between the famed vineyards of the Chianti wine region and the coastal spots around Maremma. A stay at Glamping Il Sole sets you up for scenic steam train rides among UNESCO-listed countryside; ambles, canters and two-wheeled tours of seafront national parkland... as well as tours of one of Italy’s (and the world’s) most famed wine-producing regions. Even if the kids are prone to booing about being bored, it’s a safe bet they won’t around here: first of all, there’s lots of grassy space for them to roam around, and secondly, they’re invited to help the farmhands at feeding time (just ask the site team to arrange a farm tour). Accommodation is in cosy yurts, which accommodate up to four. When you arise in the morning, head a few steps across the yurt field to the roomy communal yurt to be roused by the waft of breakfast made by the expert site chef. In the evenings, dinner is dished up inside by candlelight or outside at sunset... and all food is sourced from around the farm's highly handsome 85-hectare expanse.

Local attractions

Around an hour’s drive away is Siena, filled with Tuscan architectural treasures like Piazza del Campo and its Gothic town hall. There's also the striking 14th-century Torre del Mangia: highly recommended while here is a climb to the top of this slender tower, where you’ll be able to take in some pretty spectacular views out over the city and its 17 historic districts. Into your fine Italian wines? Then head south of Siena to the medieval hilltop town of Montalcino, to partake in sips of its famed red Brunello di Montalcino wine. The settlement is set in the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia region, which is crossed by a fully restored 19th-century railway for viewsome vintage steam engine rides along a line between Monte Antico and Asciano. Right on the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, about 45 minutes’ scenic pootle away, is the beaut 9,000-hectare Natural Park of Maremma, which stretches along the coastline between Principina a Mare and Talamone. The park is covered in dense pine forests and fringed by the sea's rocky shoreline, making it a top spot for outdoorsy days on foot or two wheels, on horseback or, in the water, from a canoe or a kayak.
