It’s probably a safe bet to imagine that any place that goes to the bother of installing multicoloured lights in its swimming pool takes its leisure time pretty seriously. And so it is at Marina Palmense’s Girasole Eco Family Village, where the waterpark features not only snazzy lighting but also a hot tub, waterslide, water play area and comfy loungers for hours of amusement and/or relaxation as you require. Dry-land downtime is just as well looked after, with all sorts of sporty spaces: a tennis court, football field, five-a-side football pitches, table tennis, and a beach volleyball court for competitive sorts, and gym classes and a fitness area for those who prefer to go at their own pace. Accompanying bambini can hang out at the playground or congregate with like-minded souls for a whole heap of activities organised by the friendly folks on site. The antics continue into the evening too, with a busy programme of family-friendly entertainment and plenty of eats and drinks on offer at the restaurant, pizzeria and lounge bars (although you can also hit the mini market for bits to cook your own dinner – if you can find the time, that is). Feeling a bit weary after all these antics? Take time for a bit of pampering at the wellness area, or venture out of the site for a chilled day on the beach (it’s right next door – how convenient).

Local attractions

It’s worth tearing yourself away from the on-site offerings once in a while, as there’s much to explore along this stretch of the Marche coast. The easiest way to get out and about is to sign up for one of the organised excursions that run in summer, or use the site’s rental service to hire bikes or canoes for pedalling or paddling at your leisure. For cultural doings, head to Fermo, 15 minutes’ drive away, to wander around the cathedral, the historic library, the Roman baths and the underground Roman cisterns before settling down for a bit of people-watching over a coffee in the Renaissance-style Piazza del Popolo. Also worth a poke around nearby are the villages of Montefiore dell’Aso, Moresco, San Benedetto and Grottammare, all of which are around 20 minutes away. And don’t forget the beaches – the coastline here is pretty much lined with soft sands and pebbly stretches that make for some fab family days out.
