  • Family-run site in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park
  • A 15-minute drive to the sea at Villammare and to hilltop Morigerati
  • Pool, horses, a bar and restaurant on site; direct access to walks
Surrounded by Mediterranean scrub in the steep and rugged Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, Le Dieci Querce is a family-run and family-friendly site near Salerno in Campania. Ancient oak trees are scattered around the camping area, and horses graze peacefully in adjoining fields. Run on strictly eco-friendly terms, facilities at Le Dieci Querce include a sustainable shower and toilet block, with a separate parent-and-baby washroom to keep younger kids all clean and tidy. Teenagers can stay in contact with pals via the wifi connection, and there’s a TV room to keep them entertained too. An outdoor swimming pool in on hand for a bit of activity and cooling off, and families can replenish energy levels with a buffet breakfast and an all-day takeaway service at the café. Parents in search of a real drink in the evening can escape to the bar. You can walk dogs straight from your accommodation into the national park, and the site owners can recommend further walks as well as excursions along the Tyrrhenian Sea coastline around Villammare (15 minutes’ drive).

Non-electric forest floor tent or campervan pitch

Local attractions

Inland or to the coast? Well, if you turn east up into the hills, you’re pretty soon in rugged countryside with lots of walking and cycling options on twisting mountain roads leading to local landmarks including Bussento Caves (10 minutes’ drive) and Fontana Capello waterfall (25 minutes). Both sit on the Bussento river, where you can go canyoning (20 minutes) and wild swimming. Morigerati (15 minutes ) is a sleepy hilltop town with glorious views of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, and a few trattorias for leisurely pasta lunches. You can tour baroque-style cloisters and the small museum at the Certosa of St Lawrence monastery in Padula (40 minutes), and there are alfresco concerts at MUN (half an hour) in a modern amphitheatre in a former quarry. But back to the sea. Villammare (15 minutes) is your closest Tyrrhenian Sea swimming spot, and the village of Palinuro (45 minutes) turns up a succession of tiny beaches backed by cliffs. Beach clubs line the shores of the lively seaside resort of Marina di Camerota (55 minutes), which also has hidden coves with pristine water nearby for snorkelling.
