  • Simple pitches in Meiningen, 10 minutes' walk from town centre
  • A five-minute walk from the attractions of Goetz Cave
  • Outdoor pool, firepit and outdoor seating areas on site
Campingplatz Am Dietrich has a splendid location for a Thüringen stay – it’s just on the outskirts of Meiningen, within easy reach of the town’s attractions (such as the castle, museum and Goetz Cave) and amenities including shops, banks and restaurants. In one direction it’s a walk of about 10 minutes to get to the centre of town, but on the other side it’s pretty much straight out into the forest for a pleasant hike through the woods. Once you’ve warmed up nicely on your walk, head back to the site for a cooling dip in the outdoor pool and a bit of time relaxing in the quiet gardens. Seating areas are provided for you – one has a lovely view over the town and the other has a firepit to help keep you warm while you enjoy the evening air. Aside from these facilities this is a simple site where you’ll need to bring along whatever you need to keep you happy during your stay. Please note that there are no toilets or showers on site so you’ll need to be self-sufficient on that front.

Local attractions

Meiningen is certainly a good place to while away a day or two – it’s got some fabulous buildings like the Elisabethenburg Castle and Meiningen Court Theatre to visit (both within 20 minutes’ walk), along with Goetz Cave (five minutes’ walk), where you can head underground to see bats and watch a light show on the cave walls. For a bit more activity, head to Hobby Bike Park (five minutes by bike) for some downhill adventures. To explore a bit more of the natural world, visit the caves Sandstein- und Märchenhöhle (10 minutes’ drive), meet water-based creatures from around the world at Theme Park Marine Aquarium (25 minutes) or get the kids hand on with science at the interactive museum Explorata-Mitmachwelt (25 minutes). A couple of niche museums nearby are worth a stop too: Fahrzeugmuseum Suhl (25 minutes) is a good bet for fans of vintage vehicles, and Schiller-Museum Bauerbach (10 minutes) gives you the chance to soak up a bit of the area’s cultural past. Historicum Zinnfigurenmuseum (half an hour) is a little gem filled with fascinating displays of mini figurines in a variety of styles.
