  • Petting zoo, llama walks, pirate ship and more
In need of hols where the kids are completely taken care of? Bundle the offspring into the car and make haste for Zeltplatz Abenteuerland, a family-friendly site 15 minutes’ drive from the Höxter town of Warburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The site is specially designed for kids, teens and young adults, and there’s plenty here to keep all ages entertained: there are archery challenges for budding Robin Hoods, a pirate ship for swashbucklers, go karts for speed freaks, llama walks for young zoologists and a climbing course and adventure survivor trail for active types. Socialising and getting out and about in nature are big parts of stays hereabouts, so there are loads of team sports to join in on – like beach volleyball and footie (regular and table varieties) – and lots of chances to spend time outdoors and meeting other guests. And most of that won’t stop even if the weather isn’t cooperating, as there’s a covered all-weather space to keep the activities going. If cabin fever is starting to take over, days off site are within easy reach – keep active with hikes in the Eggegebirge mountain range (the site is in the foothills) or leisurely bike rides along the banks of the Diemel river, which flows through Warburg; or opt instead for an evening in town for some local eats.

Local attractions

Kids most at home around a coterie of furry friends? Give them a more exotic taste with days of walking and talking with gentle giants and feathered beasts – something that’s close at hand hereabouts. The bison of Wisentgehege Hardehausen are roaming the plains 10 minutes’ drive from base, the Sababurg zoo is 45 minutes away and Willingen wildlife park is a little under an hour from Warburg. At a Schloss (oops… loss) for what else to do? Well the area’s practically teeming with castles, manor houses and ruins – start with guided tours of the stunning Residenzschloss Arolsen, then move on to Wasserschloss Heerse and Castle Corvey, then clamber around the ruins of Kugelsburg in Volkmarsen and the nearby Desenberg. Keep one foot in the past with explores of Marienmünster abbey and the visitor mine Kilianstollen, then if appetites for history still go unsatisfied pile into the car for a two-hour trek to Detmold open-air museum where 500 years of Westphalian life are laid out to wander through. When more urban days beckon, head with no delay to the city of Kassel, where hours tripping around the spectacular landscaped gardens of Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, visits to the Grimm Museum and Natural History Museum and (of course) a bit of shopping are absolute musts.
