  • Scenic mountain accommodation on the edge of Vanoise National Park
  • In Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, 15 minutes' drive from Sollières-Sardières
  • Restaurant, wifi, pétanque and a play area; fishing 50 metres away
There's no getting away from the scenery when you pull up at Glamping Chenantier. No, you haven't just stepped into a muesli advert – the brilliant backdrop on display here is all part of the spectacular Vanoise National Park, one of the most scenic spots in all of Savoie (and, in the eyes of many, the whole of France). All the overnight accommodation here is cosy and commodious, without unnecessary bells and whistles to distract you from the nature all around. (That doesn't mean you're lacking in wifi, though – after all, what could be more important than uploading your reels of scenic snaps while away on hol?) Here you can either dine inside your private space or head down to the restaurant, a warm and friendly spot where nourishing meals are dished up to mountaineers. The site staff make a point of including locally-sourced items on the menu, making eats here as good for your carbon footprint as they are for your stomach. When you're not tucking into dinner or gazing up at the 3697-metre-high peak of the Dent Parrachée, other activities like pétanque, table tennis, table football, a trampoline and a kids' playground should all do their bit to fill your time nicely. And that's without mentioning the off-site amenities of Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis, where a pizzeria, supermarket, fishing lake and cheese shop are all within a few minutes' walk.

Local attractions

Lanslebourg-Mont-Cenis is one of the last villages on the D1006 road before you reach the Italian border. Piedmont's mountainous valleys are around 40 minutes' drive away, with the gorgeous Lac du Mont-Cenis (20 minutes' drive) livening up the scenery en route. The lake itself may have been created artificially, but that doesn't make the brilliant blue waters and ruined Fort de Variselle any less worthy of a couple of hours' visit. If the kids have had to trudge in your footsteps for days on end and are in need of some light entertainment, try the local bowling alley in Lanslevillard (10 minutes). You could equally head off in the opposite direction to Sollières-Sardières (15 minutes), where there's Sensations Vanoise (an outdoor activity centre), an interesting archeological museum, a spa and a soft play centre. Modane (25 minutes) is sure to be next on your agenda – the town itself has a mix of tourist shops, traditional restaurants and swoon-worthy views, while close outside there's the formidable Saint-Gobain Fort, the pretty Saint-Benoît waterfall and the Pont du Diable ('Devil's Bridge'), all three of which are about 20 minutes from base.
