  • Between the Alps and the Côte d'Azur
  • A short way from the Verdon du Gorges and regional lavender fields
  • Fishing, free wifi and a TV room
Highly highly gorgeous… Camping Frédéric Mistral is in a land of scenery so spectacular you'll find yourself stopping at several times daily (hourly?) to snap pics. It's all based at the high-up village of Castellane in the Provence, between the Alps and the Côte d'Azur, and upstream from the eye-wateringly fab Verdon du Gorges. And then there are the lavender fields, the blue blue lakes, and the craggy mountain passes… seriously, you'll be snapping many a shot. Frédéric Mistral has added comfy and up to date amenities alongside its pitches, including free hot showers, toilet blocks with disabled access, and a launderette. For the more leisurely side of things – when you're not out and about among this lush landscape – there's a play area and a pétanque court, fishing, a TV room, and free wifi throughout the site.

Local attractions

You might be all in a dither deciding where to delve into first among the first-rate landscapes around Camping Frédéric Mistral, so go and think about it while wandering around its local village of Castellane deep in the Verdon Natural Regional Park, a town dating back to Roman times and set 724 metres above sea level; as you'd expect, the views from here are spectacular. Castellane is crammed with old buildings and churches from throughout the centuries, the most famed of which is the chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc, eyeing up the town from 140 metres above. Hike the half hour or so to here from the town centre behind the Church of St. Andrew; again, spectacular views come here as standard... Pick up picnic bits in town at the traditional Provencal market before having a long and viewsome hike around it (the GR 4 hiking trail passes through Castellon), or traversing along to the nearby Gorges du Verdon, the deepest gorge in France, to tackle one of the hiking trails in and around its depth, paddle along its waters by boat or canoe, or have a road trip around its edge by car or bike (whichever you pick, keep an eye out for vultures and birds of prey swooping around overhead).
