  • Treehouses five metres up on a 20-hectare woodland estate
  • Pond for carp and bass fishing as well as sailing in the site boats
  • Wildlife haven with nature trail, summer orchids and treasure hunts
Ohhhh... this is such a tiptop place. Stay five metres up in a spectacularly scenic woodland setting at the treehouses of Cabanes du Maine Lafont in the Charente department in south-west France... this is, right now, time to look at the site pics. Your splendid tree-based berths are on a peaceful and family-run 20-hectare property in the Poitou-Charentes region, where the only sounds you should hear are ornithological neighbours chirping contentedly among the leaves – and perhaps a frequent popping sound as you uncork yet another sample of the local vino... Around the region, Cabanes du Maine Lafont is a kilometre and a half from Juignac, 20 minutes' drive from Chalais and 40 minutes south of Angoulême. You can stay on site for your whole hol should you so wish: there's a handsome Natura 2000 hiking trail to tackle, among swathes of orchids from May to July, and a treasure trail with map to go a-hunting along. Fisherfolk can angle for a spot on one of the two pontoons to try their luck landing carp, roach and bass, or you can bag one of the boats to take a punt out on the pond. Finally, as you're deep in the woods here in an area with little light pollution, do remember to bring a torch or two along on your treehouse hol, as well as – just in case it rains – your wellies or waterproof boots.

Local attractions

Those seeking more watery days can head half an hour's drive to Brossac and Étang Vallier for days of paddling and lakeside beach basking; over a dozen hiking trails as well as three bike paths are in the surrounding countryside for waterside rambles and bike rides. Day trips are easily sorted from here too, as Brossac is between the Dordogne, Charente-Maritime and Aquitaine regions, and just over an hour's drive from the famed old city of Cognac. Closer to home, Brantôme (45 minutes' drive) is in mighty pretty setting along the Dronne river, and has an abbey with bell tower claimed to be the oldest in France. Angoulême 35 kilometres away is one of France's designated Towns of Art and History, with fine old ramparts (over two kilometres' worth), and handsome views of the town and Charente river from Place Beaulieu. It's also known worldwide as the venue of the International Comic festival every January; if you're not there just then, look out for cartoons colourfully added to several town walls.
