  • Family-friendly riverside site in Saint-Jean-d’Angély
  • La Rochelle, Cognac and the Marais Poitevin within an hour's drive
  • Theme meals and toddler pool sessions twice a week in summer
En famille, à deux or with a bunch of mates, – however you choose to roam, there’s always that perennial question: ’what can we do around here?’ Stay at Camping Val de Boutonne and you’d more rightly be asking ‘what can’t we do?’. You’d do well to bag as much time as possible at this peaceful family-friendly place: its location on the banks of the Boutonne river in Saint-Jean-d’Angély is mighty handy for shooting off to all manner of Charente-Maritime attractions. Beaches and fishing villages? Check. Châteaux, Roman ruins, UNESCO World Heritage Sites? Got ‘em. Wetland walks, bike paths and rivers to paddle a canoe down? Yup. World-famed tipples? Mais oui. All within an hour's drive? Très bien. Feeling exhausted at the thought of constant activity? Fear not – there’s plenty of space to chill out around the wooded site, with an outdoor pool to refresh in, a pétanque court for a bit of gentle exercise and and a playground for any nippers who’ve retained energy even after yours is depleted. Tinies have their own dedicated pool session a couple of times a week (with inflatables for extra splashing fun) and all ages can feast together at themed meals twice a week in summer. A little food shop on site has a range of essentials and local bits and bobs; it’s a 20-minute trot to the town centre for further stocking up or to hit the local bars and restaurants.

Local attractions

Stick around in Saint-Jean-d’Angély and you’ll soon see why it’s been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the abbey, clock tower and half-timbered houses make it a fab place for a wander. And there’s loads more to seek out in the surrounds – the châteaux of Dampierre-sur Boutonne and La Roche Courbon are half an hour away by car, as are the Roman ruins at Saintes. Nippers and folks with less of a tolerance for history may prefer to steer towards the Boutonne to pedal along the riverside paths (bike hire on site), or head to the canoe club a couple of minutes’ walk away for a day’s paddling. More aquatic antics can be had strolling, cycling or paddling around the waterways at the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park, or by heading to the coast for bike and beach days around La Rochelle or on Oléron island, an hour away. And that well-earned snifter? That’d come from the brandy distilleries in Cognac, 45 minutes away.
