  • Well-kept grass pitches by the Sarthe river, in the Pays de la Loire
  • A five-minute walk to Sablé-sur-Sarthe and 45 minutes’ drive to Angers
  • Family site with pools, shop, entertainment and sports facilities
Dotted by mature trees and bordering the Sarthe river, Camping de L’Hippodrome is set on three hectares of peaceful grounds. This pleasant spot is really well set up for family breaks, with a baby-changing area and a playground with swings and ping-pong, as well as tennis courts and a TV room for older kids. Life centres around the two pools (one of which is a paddling pool for the kids) during the day, and at night in high season there’s regular entertainment to keep everyone happy – pétanque tournaments, barbecue nights and even karaoke, if you’re feeling in good voice. You can try fishing on the river from here, and there’s easy access for boats too, as well as plenty of options for active types within half an hour’s drive, including golfing, cycling and horse riding. The site is near the handsome town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe, with a riverside path leading you right into the centre in a few minutes (on foot or by bike) to have a nosey around its castle and clutch of museums. Neat hedges provide privacy at all the pitches here, and guests have access to two smart shower blocks with full disabled access, plus a handy little store (May to September) where you can pick up your daily baguette as well as local produce (like the renowned Petits Sablés shortbread) and drinks. If you’ve forgotten something (hairdryers, iron or bedding), chances are Reception will be able to help, and staff there can also fill you in on day trip information and bike hire.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Spacious pitch with hedges to provide privacy. Friendly welcome, clear instructions for site rules/layout. Located by the rover, easy and scenic walk into the town to explore.

Disliked: SatNav maps directs you to a dead end; although the description on confirmation booming says this, it doesn't offer a better route. One shower block was closed (which was clearly notified at check-in, so not unexpected), so slightly further to go for toilet/shower etc.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Good shaded areas, toilet/shower block and smashing little swimming pool. I think that the pool might get quite busy in the peek season. My welcome was very good. The walk into the town was approx 15 mins and quite flat.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The pitch was huge and clean. The toilets looked a bit dated but were perfectly clean and the showers worked well. The camp was near the town - sadly most of the town's restaurants were shut - maybe because it was the summer or maybe we were here mid week and they might open at the weekends. The town was beautiful. The site itself was one of the cheaper sites were have used on our holiday. There was a playground and a pool, neither of which we used. There was a possibility of ordering fresh bread for the morning but it had to be ordered by 11 am the previously morning and we never actually made that. It was an ideal site for a short stay over.

Disliked: No restaurant or shop. The town had all its restaurants closed. Just a few bars open that did not do food.

Local attractions

There’s nothing like messing about on the river, and you can hire canoes, paddleboards and pedalos on the waterside to potter down the Sarthe, or stroll down to the quay for organised cruises past the grand 18th-century castle in Sablé-sur-Sarthe (five minutes’ walk). There’s masses for culture vultures too, with exhibitions on monastic life at Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes (10 minutes’ drive), and frescoes at St.Hilary Church in the medieval village of Asnières-sur-Vègre (20 minutes). Le Mans (an hour) mixes up Roman and Renaissance architecture, and in Angers (45 minutes) you can explore castles, museums and botanical gardens. Treat the kids to sea lion shows at Zoo de la Flèche (40 minutes), or take them deep underground to see prehistoric remains in the Valley of the Caves of Saulges (30 minutes). And who could resist the chance to dig into regional shortbread after a tour of one of Sablé-sur-Sarthe’s famous biscuit manufacturers?
