  • Quiet family campsite half an hour’s drive from Metz in the Moselle
  • A 25-minute drive to the Maginot Line; half an hour to Walygator Park
  • Spacious pitches among trees; fishing lake, tennis and forest walks
If you’re looking for a quiet family-friendly campsite that combines a leafy countryside setting with all sorts of sporty happenings, Camping La Croix du Bois Sacker in the Moselle may well hit the spot. Situated five minutes’ drive from the sleepy village of Burtoncourt and half an hour from Metz, the site has amenities for tennis, basketball, handball, netball and ping pong… to name but a few. Overlooking the Ruisseau de Burtoncourt stream, the site is on eight hectares of woodland for family romps with any accompanying dogs, and encompasses a fishing lake well-stocked with carp for the anglers among your party. There’s a playground to wear out younger offspring, and a pétanque court for competitive families keen to challenge each other to a game. There’s also nightly entertainment if you fancy joining in. Should you be into alfresco cooking, there are supermarkets for stocking-up expeditions in Boulay-Moselle (20 minutes’ drive), as well as takeaways, snack bars and patisseries if you’d prefer someone else to do the hard work for you. And what of the pitches? They’re all fully serviced, spacious in size and either bounded by neat hedges or tucked under mature trees for that extra bit of privacy.

Fully-serviced grass and earth pitch

Liked: A beautiful and peaceful stopover/short break site, away from civilisation but with a well-stacked small shop for basics. Superb basketball/football court for use with a key to open, plus petanque and table tennis. Very friendly owners. Spotless and well proportioned shower/toilet block

Disliked: Very remote from villages/towns, although bus stop about 2km uphill. No bar

Liked: The site seemed very well managed, all of the faculties were very clean. It’s quite a small site but even though we only had a one night stop over we had an excellent time and met a number campers from uk, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. We discussed talked about camping experiences we hah had from all over the world.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

To pay your respects to the victims of the World Wars, visit the Nécropole Nationale Chambière in Metz (half an hour’s drive), or the Lorraine American Cemetery and Memorial (35 minutes’ drive). Walk the Maginot Line at Veckring (25 minutes), or take a subterranean train tour of the bomb launchers and gun turrets at Ouvrage Hackenberg Maginot Line Fortress (half an hour). Head back to ancient Roman times at the Museum of La Cour d’Or in Metz (half an hour), with its strong collection of classical statuary through to medieval stained glass and Renaissance paintings. Come firmly up to date again with the best of modern French art at the Centre Pompidou-Metz. And if the kids haven’t moaned at all this history and culture, reward their good behaviour with a day out on the rollercoasters and dinosaur trail at Walygator Park. There are real animals and a falconry show to be seen at the Zoo d’Amnéville (both half an hour), and if you hit an unexpected dodgy-weather day, head off to the indoor slopes at SnowWorld Amnéville (35 minutes) for a ski lesson.
