  • Family-friendly site on the banks of Étang de Goule
  • A 20-minute drive to Château de Sagonne for summer arts events
  • Lake beach, watersports, tennis, hiking trail and on-site activities
If your idea of a fine family holiday is one where you can get to a range of activities with very little effort, you’ll be in the right place at Le Village Loisirs de Goule, in the Cher region about five minutes’ drive from the village of Bessais-le-Fromental. The site is on the banks of the Étang de Goule, with a lake beach (which has a supervised swimming area in July and August) and an inflatable obstacle course to try your skills on. Guests can fish from the banks too, or head to the watersports centre to have sailing lessons or rent kayaks, pedalos and paddleboards to explore the lake. Fancy staying on dry land for a little while? Guests also have access to a miniature golf course, a tennis court, a pétanque court and a hiking trail, plus playgrounds for the kids and a gym for keen fitness fans. And if that’s not enough activity, you can also sign up for treasure hunts, laser games and nature workshops for an extra charge, or hire mountain bikes to set off and explore the local area. When the time comes to relax you’ll have plenty of space for that too – each pitch here sleeps up to six people, with partial shade and lake views as standard. Communal barbecue areas are provided (pick up supplies 15 minutes’ drive away in Ainay-le-Château), as are laundry facilities and a couple of bathroom blocks.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The campsite was quiet with lots of shady pitches. We could choose where we pitched up and had a large area which we shared with my parents. The toilets were clean and had toilet paper. Free Wi-Fi at the cafe near the lake.

Disliked: You couldn’t swim in the lake as there was a problem with algae this was a shame as it the reason we had chosen the site as with a 5 and 7 year old they want to swim daily. There was a public pool 20min drive away so we did visit that.

Local attractions

There are lots of things to busy yourselves with on site at this park, but you should also leave plenty of time to get out and about in the local area. Those with a head for history might like to start at Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil (25 minutes’ drive), to explore the 14th-century building and the gardens, or introduce the kids to times gone by through activities including escape room games. More history is on display at Château de Sagonne (20 minutes), a medieval castle that hosts an arts and cultural festival in summer, and the Gallo-Roman amphitheatre in Drevant (half an hour). If it’s natural views you like best, take a walk along the flower-filled paths of Le Jardin d’Elisée (15 minutes). Meanwhile, Street Art City (15 minutes) is the place to go if you’d like to walk among colourful outdoor murals instead.
