  • Peaceful site next to L'Arbre Sec public park and the Yonne river
  • A five-minute drive to the centre of Auxerre and 25 minutes to Chablis
  • TV room, play area and games room; swimming pool a short walk away
Wine enthusiast but your partner’s more into footie? Camping d'Auxerre – five minutes’ drive from the centre of Auxerre in the viniculture hotspot of northern Burgundy and steps from the Stade de l'Abbé-Deschamps football stadium – could be a mighty fine base for you both. This shaded and laidback park on the banks of the Yonne river has three hectares of grounds, so younger followers of the beautiful game can set up their own tournaments. And for the wine? The site sits in a region known for growing Chardonnay and Chablis grapes, with vineyards less than a 10-minute drive away. When you’re not watching the game or sipping your way through world-class wines, the site has a TV room, play area and games room to make the most of. For more amenities, a public swimming pool and tennis courts are in nearby Parc de l'Arbre Sec park – where free concerts are hosted and the popular summertime Catalpa Festival music event is held – less than a 15-minute walk away. If you head into the centre of Auxerre instead, you can amble along the river, take boat trips on the Canal du Nivernais or wander through cobbled lanes. Historical sights within a 10-minute drive include the Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre and the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Auxerre; swing by the Quai de la République on the water’s edge to get views of some of the city’s top architecture across the river.

Local attractions

Other must-see sights in the city of Auxerre while you’re staying at this pretty park include the Museum Leblanc-Duvernoy displaying paintings, furniture and tapestries, the famed gothic-style La Tour de l'Horloge clocktower and the Cadet Rousselle statue of the 18th-century town crier (all 10 minutes’ drive away). Hoping to hotfoot it far into the countryside, perhaps while investigating the local’s area’s wine culture? Take the Yonne Vineyards Tourism Trail to wander through the Chablis region (25 minutes’ drive), where highly rated dry white wine grapes are grown, as well as the neighbouring areas of Auxerrois and Tonnerrois. For other rural escapades, the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan, an hour and 10 minutes’ drive away, is spread across the four departments of Burgundy and includes 700 square kilometres of woodland and 13 square kilometres of lakes. You can drive or hike through the lovely landscape taking in farmland, stone walls and oak trees while keeping an eye out for birds of prey too…

Liked: Proximity to Auxerre and the wildlife on the campsite. The showers and toilet block were clean.

Disliked: Campsite was meant to open at 2:00pm but staff decided that as they had worked extra the day before they put a notice up that they would not open until 3:00pm. So decided to drive into Auxerre as to waiting 1 hour in a queue, we came back at 3:20pm to find that they were closing off the entrance to the site as they were full we were that last vehilce before they put the barriers up. We assume as we had a reservation that we would have been allowed in but would have had to go in via the exit road. The staff were generally not very friendly or helpful during the stay. Arrived at 8:10am to collect bread and croissants only to be told no it is 8:30am despite the bread sitting there ready for collection. There was no toilet paper in the toilets. Large number of migrant workers on the campsite who were probably there for the grape picking and did not cause any issues, but were not proper campers with polythene covering there small tents to keep them dry making the place feel more like a migrant camp than a holiday site.
