Pool or beach, beach or pool? What a holiday dilemma to have – but at Camping Le Lac you’ve got every right simply to answer ‘both, thanks’ for an easy way to solve it. That's possible because this Aquitaine site is about a 10-minute drive from the beaches of Mimizan Plage, which has around 10 kilometres of sand to its name, with space for surfers as well as family swims. And it’s also got its own extensive aquatic area on site, with a paddling pool, splash zone and Jacuzzi as well as a lovely 450 m² main swimming pool. Those aren’t the only options when it comes to water, either – as the name suggests, this site is on the shores of Lake Aureilhan, where you can hire paddleboards and kayaks or just chill out with a picnic on the lakeside. There’s plenty to do away from the water, as well – the site has a miniature golf course, a pétanque court, a volleyball court and table tennis as well as a play area and various organised activities for the kids (five days a week in July and August for ages 4 to 14). Bikes can be hired on site to help you get around easily, and the reception team are on hand to give you advice on places to go and things to do in the area. Time for a rest and a little pick-me-up? The snack bar is open throughout the day, providing coffees at breakfast time, ice creams in the afternoon and pizzas in the evening. There’s also a poolside bar where you can grab an aperitif to accompany your sunbathing.

Liked: a lovely site next to a gorgeous lake, with big pitches, nice toilet facilities & really helpful staff. A lovely site with lots of shade from trees. Cycling through the forest to the beach was amazing.

Disliked: It wasn't busy when we were there but there was some noise (music & shouting) from some pitches which went on till very late, and would probably be worse when it's busy. not free wifi.

Liked: Le calme du camping. Nous avons dormi en tente et les espaces tente sont proches des sanitaire. Le bar le soir est très agréable. Le personnel en général est agréable.

Disliked: Les sanitaires qui ne sont pas propres. Les toilettes sont sales des le matin. Les douches sont sales et pas pratique. C est compliqué de se douché avec une enfant de 5 ans, les cabines sont petites. Il manque également de lumière, quand le soir arrive nous sommes dans la pénombre pour se brosser les dents.

Disliked: ai effectué ma réservation via le site Pitchup. Sur la réservation il était noté « heure d’arrivée et de départ : à tout moment ». Nous sommes arrivés à 11h, on m’a informé une fois arrivée sur place que les entrées ne se faisait qu’à partir de 14h. J’ai tout de même stipulé au Mr de la réception qu’il était noté sur ma réservation « heure d’arrivée à tout moment » mais aucune solution proposée. (Je précise que nous avions réservé un emplacement tente). En nous baladant dans le camping sous la pluie, nous avons vu que nombreux d’emplacements tente étaient libres, pourtant on ne nous a rien proposé à notre arrivée. Ensuite, à partir de 23h30, un groupe de jeunes s’est mit à hurler, cela a durer jusqu’à 2h du matin. Mon conjoint est intervenu, d’autres campeurs également mais cela n’a servi à rien, ils ont réveillé tout le camping. En le signalant à la réception le lendemain matin, on nous a dit que ce n’était pas normal et qu’il y avait normalement un agent de sécurité mais personne n’est venu, pourtant les cris s’entendaient dans tout le camping. Ensuite, les sanitaires sont plus que vétustes, pas de prise de courant dans les cabines avec lavabo, nous sommes obligés de nous coiffer, préparer au milieu de tout le monde. Nous avons du écourter notre séjour et rentrer une nuit plus tôt car de la pluie était annoncée le lendemain matin, nous l’avions prévu cependant nous pensions pouvoir partir « à tout moment » comme il était noté sur la réservation et ainsi partir l’après midi pour ne pas avoir à replier notre tente sous la pluie. Très déçue de ce camping.

Liked: Quiet location, nice sized pitches, easy to get to the beach / shops. Stunning lake right behind the site and park access gate right to it. plenty to entertain the kids. Promenade Fleurie and Phare des Contis ( lighthouse ) are both well worth a visit 😊

Local attractions

So… to the beach? Mimizan Plage (10 minutes’ drive) is a lovely place to spend the day, either playing in the sand or taking a lesson so you can join the surfers that flock to this part of the world to hit the waves. There are several other beaches along this stretch of coast too – but none are quite as impressive as the huge Dune du Pilat (an hour), the tallest dune in Europe at 110 metres high. Inland watery options include the lakes of Biscarosse (25 minutes) and Sanguinet (35 minutes), both of which have lifeguarded swimming areas in calm water. Away from the water, there’s horse riding (10 minutes) or treetop trails at Landes Adventure Park (10 minutes’ walk). For a change of pace, slow things down on a visit to Écomusée de Marquèze (35 minutes), where you can learn all about the life of the Landes in the 19th century at an interactive museum that’s also got a vintage steam train to ride on.
