  • Peaceful and pretty countryside site in the scenic Dordogne
  • Half-hour drive from Château de Hautefort, Jumilhac, Périgord Limousin
  • Painting, ceramics and raku workshops, flea market, pétanque and games
What’s your holiday aesthetic? Paint a picture… Does it involve leafy estate grounds, pastoral strolls, flea markets and artist retreats? Then don a smock and head along to Camping Le Pagnon, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Dordogne village of St Mesmin, where stays are pretty much a blank canvas. The site’s owners Harry and Truus are artists themselves and run weekly workshops from May to September, giving guests the opportunity to try their hands at painting, ceramics or the Japanese art of raku (pottery firing) if they'd like, all available for an extra charge. There’s plenty of inspiration hereabouts too, especially if landscapes fit the oeuvre: in the stunning Périgord Vert, there are more forests nearby than you could shake a stick (or paintbrush) at. Fill up that artist’s eye with strolls through the site’s rose garden and along forest paths, and head half an hour away to the Périgord Limousin Natural Regional Park for more challenging routes. Taking part in workshops isn’t a requirement of stays at Le Pagnon, so there’s plenty to do that doesn’t involve getting creative: the site has a flea market to rummage through in one of the estate buildings, a pétanque court for competitive types, a canteen with old Dutch games, and a terrace where guests can sit and chat. Simply passing a peaceful afternoon in the shade of one of the walnut trees couldn’t be recommended enough either…

Local attractions

Talk of the Dordogne and the Périgord may conjure a particular image: the French château. There are some fab examples hereabouts to tick that particular box, starting with the famed Château de Hautefort, 25 minutes’ drive away, and moving on to Château des Milandes – the former home of famed dancer Josephine Baker – a little under an hour and a half from the site. But time marchés on, so travel back to the present by seeking out that oh-so-French market life… There are lots of options near the site, like the Thursday markets at Excideuil (20 minutes) and Terrasson-Lavilledieu (50 minutes), Objat’s Sunday market (half an hour), and – during lucky, well-timed stays – Saint-Masmin’s night market. Diving beneath the surface, the Tourtoirac caves and the famous Lascaux II caves are both within an hour of base, and well worth an explore. If digging around caves doesn’t do it, opt instead for touring the spectacularly stunning towns and villages round the site: the clifftop Rocamadour is an hour and a half away, it’s an hour to Brantôme, and Jumilhac-le-Grand and Saint Robert are both within half an hour.
