Zooming off to Zealand? Located on the north coast of this largest of Danish isles, Kongernes Feriepark is a family-friendly site within easy reach of both sea and forest around 10 minutes' drive from Graested. Copenhagen is also an hour away by road, making this site a nifty base for families, couples and solo travellers looking to explore the urban and wild sides of the Danish Capital Region. In search of on-site R+R? Lots of leisure options are on hand here: kids and adults may fancy a dip in the pool when the weather is fine, but indoor options like a TV and games room are on hand for evenings and cloudier days. Guests with itchy feet can hire a bike and set off for the day to explore the countryside, while those sticking closer to home can choose from fishing exploits, games of miniature golf and pétanque and high-season entertainment. Handily for those considering a bit of pampering at the spa, kids' activities run on site to give grownups a bit of me-time. Kongernes Feriepark ticks plenty of practical boxes, too: facilities here include wifi, a launderette and a spacious, well-kept shared kitchen. Local attractions

There's no getting away from the sea around here: Gilleleje harbour (10 minutes' drive), where working vessels and pleasure craft are docked side by side, is a fine place to start. For a philosophical stroll, head out of town and make tracks for the Gilbjergstien (10 minutes), a dramatic coastal walk once frequented by local brainbox Søren Kierkegaard. (Don't let highfalutin' thoughts distract you from the stunning sea vistas, though.) Fancy yourself lord or lady of the manor? Zealand is home to several splendid castles: the Frederiksborg (30 minutes) is a 17th-century waterside palace that looks like something out of a fairytale, while in Helsingør (40 minutes) the Kronborg is another fine fortress that's worthy of note. In a past life, this mid-sized city was the setting of Hamlet; today, Helsingør is home to attractions like shops, restaurants and an impressive naval museum. For kid-pleasing times, head to Nordsjællands Fuglepark, a local zoo (20 minutes). More family-friendly jaunts are on hand in Copenhagen (one hour), including the Nyhavn waterfront, the Little Mermaid statue and the rides and slides at Tivoli Gardens amusement park.
