  • Peaceful site in the mountains outside the Croatian village of Gračac
  • Zrmanja river half an hour’s drive; Paklenica National Park 45 minutes
  • Swimming pool and playground; food from nearby farms; communal fridge
If you don’t cope well with summer heatwaves, consider booking a spot at Camping Lika. This peaceful site on the outskirts of the Croatian village of Gračac sits at an altitude of 550 metres above sea level. You know what that means, right? At night, the temperatures are about 10ºC lower than on the Dalmatian coast, which should have you sleeping like a baby under a nice, cosy blanket. Talk about the best of both worlds. Separated by green fences, the spacious pitches come with water and electricity supply. Lika also has a well-maintained amenities block, a washing-up area and a launderette. Start the day with a pre-ordered breakfast of freshly baked pastries or bread. At reception, you can buy honey, eggs, cheese and other products from nearby farms; for anything else, there’s a grocery store about 300 metres away. And if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, you can store any excess purchases in the communal fridge freezer. Not looking forward to the 45-minute drive to beaches like Seline or Sipa? No problem: just grab a sun lounger on the decked area at the on-site pool, where you’ll get the chance to splash around or swim a few laps. There’s also a playground for the kids – if you manage to get them out of the pool, that is… Attractions in the surrounding area include the underground caves at Cerovačke špilje (five minutes’ drive) and the rocky peak of Veliki Crnopac, with its via ferrata climbing route (10 minutes).

Local attractions

With its collection of small waterfalls, the Zrmanja river (half an hour) is a popular spot for a swim in clear waters fringed by luxuriant vegetation. If you want to crank it up a notch, continue along the river to Nadvoda (40 minutes), where several outfits arrange whitewater rafting expeditions. Covered by pine and beech forests and scored by deep canyons, the spectacular landscape of Paklenica National Park (45 minutes) is a hiker’s dream. Trails lead past streams and caverns, including the Manita peć complex, with its unusual rock formations. And keep your eyes peeled for peregrine falcons and woodpeckers on your wanderings. The city of Zadar (one hour and five minutes) is known for its ancient ruins (including the Roman Forum, with its Pillar of Shame) and its 16th-century Venetian heritage, such as the Land Gate, topped by St Mark’s lion. Stroll around the historic city centre before winding up at the Sea Organ at sunset.
