  • Family-friendly site on the edge of the Žumberak and Samobor Mountains
  • Samobor and the Wine Road 15 minutes’ drive; Zagreb 45 minutes
  • Playground and football pitch; organised children’s excursions
If holidaying on the Croatian coast has whetted your appetite for more and different locales in this green country, leave the waters of the Adriatic behind and head inland, to the Žumberak and Samobor Mountains. Just on the easternmost edge of this gloriously lush area of forested peaks and deep valleys is Etno Kuća pod Okićem (literally, ‘Ethno House under the Okić mountain’). Part of a traditional farm, this small hilltop site sits under the ruined fortifications of the 13th-century town of Okić. The dilapidated defensive walls sit at almost 500 metres above sea level, and they attract hikers looking for a challenge on the via ferrata climbing route. The rewards for those who get to the top are views of the surrounding peaks and as far as the capital Zagreb (45 minutes’ drive). But before you explore the local area, take a little time to settle into this site, which is dotted with fruit trees (they add generous splashes of colour in the spring) and wooden huts. Your hosts, the Slakoper family, also run educational workshops and guided excursions for children, so you can leave your offspring in good hands while you embark on your own little adventure. Perhaps on the Samobor Wine Road, which starts from Samobor city (15 minutes) and takes in villages like Molvice (10 minutes) and Slani Dol (half an hour), where you can stop for tastings of locally made wines. Back at the site after their adventures, the kids can expend the last of their energy in the playground, running around the lawn or trying to score a goal on the football pitch.

Liked: This is one of the most beautiful locations, rolling hills and vineyards and an incredible view of the city at night! It’s peaceful, there’s a nice toilet/shower and a cozy little bar. The best part is the host, honestly one of the loveliest people, he just wants everything to be perfect for you. Support this small business and do bring cash to pay for your stay. We were only there for a short time as we had to hit the road early but we will definitely be back to enjoy it properly!

Local attractions

At Botanicki vrt Suban botanical garden (10 minutes) you can have a picnic surrounded by fragrant medicinal plants. Make the most of the fresh air before heading underground with a guided tour of the mining shafts at Rudnik sveta Barbara (35 minutes’ drive), which was in operation as far back as the 15th century, when it yielded enormous quantities of copper. In addition to hiking, mountain biking and climbing, the Žumberak and Samobor Mountains are a favoured destination for wildlife watching, since it is home to bears, wolves and spotted salamanders, plus myriad bird species, including goshawks. If you have no luck with living animals, you might spot fossils of ammonites, especially at Gregurić Brijeg (35 minutes). Elegant 19th-century Austro-Hungarian buildings in Zagreb include the Croatian National Theatre and the Croatian State Archives, but the capital city also has a vertiginous neo-Gothic cathedral with tall twin spires and the medieval Church of St. Mark, its roof covered in colourful tiles portraying the local coats of arms.
