  • In a tropical valley with trails leading towards three waterfalls
  • A 30-minute drive to the centre of Chapada dos Guimarães National Park
  • Shared kitchen and firepit; Cuiabá an hour and 20 minutes’ drive
Take yourself off to the tropics with a stay at Cânions do Jamacá, in the middle of a stream-filled valley in Brazil with access to trails leading towards three waterfalls rushing into pools prime for wild swimming. This peaceful place is in the sprawling Mato Grosso state in west-central Brazil and its rainforest and savanna surrounds have been the target of conservation and reforestation over the last 30 years; in fact, the site’s owner takes part in these sorts of efforts as he creates and promotes agroforestry systems courses. It’s an hour and 20 minutes’ drive from the nearest city of Cuiabá, the capital of the region founded during the 18th-century gold rush and with a clutch of colonial architecture to check out. Nearer to the site, the 33,000 protected hectares of Chapada dos Guimarães National Park – which circles around a point considered to be the geographical centre of South America – is a 30-minute drive away for hikes across the huge cliffs or to the red sandstone Cidade de Pedra rock formations (55 minutes, a registered guide or driver is needed). The site’s a comfy retreat after traipsing around in the wilderness: it has a firepit and a shared kitchen with a stove, fridge, freezer, utensils and crockery for sorting food plus other essentials like toilets and hot showers.

Local attractions

Walks to waterfalls are popular in Chapada dos Guimarães National Park with trails including the Waterfall Circuit, and the Véu de Noiva Waterfall Lookout path and its 86-metre fall. Aiming for a trickier amble? Head off to the highest point in the park, Morro de São Jerônimo, a peak that takes five hours to reach with epic views out over the region. To snorkel in Chapada dos Guimarães you’ll need a registered guide and a 4x4: make your way to Vale do Rio Claro to come to a viewpoint looking out over a valley and the Crista do Galo (rooster's crest) rock formations with deep pools leading to a clear river. For city times after all the nature, Cuiabá (an hour and 20 minutes) has a tree-surrounded Republic Square to spend some time in and handsome sights including the clock towers of the modern Cathedral of Bom Jesus. In the Mato Grosso History Museum, learn all about the local history through the paintings and models showing battles from the past. Cuiabá’s also seen as the gateway to the Pantanal wetlands (about three hours south of the park) which travellers visit for the possibility of spotting jaguars, macaws and caimans.
