  • Friendly, well-kept site five minutes' drive from Hopetoun
  • 15 minutes' drive from Fitzgerald River National Park
  • Swimming pool, tennis court, bar and bistro on site
Hoping for beach days and bush days on your hols? Hop along to Hopetoun, a small seaside town on the Western Australia coast, flanked by a gorgeous beach and the Fitzgerald River National Park. While you’re there, bag a berth at Wavecrest Village and Tourist Park, a well-presented and fably friendly place five minutes’ drive from the town centre’s shops, cafés and boat launches. This is a site with a real community vibe, aided by the wide range of sociable activities at the busy clubhouse. Away from organised antics, there’s a swimming pool, tennis court and a playground to keep you busy. It’s highly possible that you’ll be out and about rather a lot in this area – hiking, snorkelling, surfing and fishing are popular picks for active types, and there are some stunning beaches to dedicate some hours to as well. All this activity is bound to work up something of an appetite, so it’s mighty handy that there’s an excellent bistro on site, with a kids’ menu and plenty of veggie and gluten-free options, plus regular theme nights. There’s a bar and bottle shop too if it’s more of a thirst you’ve developed, and takeaway food and coffee for quick fixes. A camp kitchen and barbecue area are on site for those who prefer the DIY approach.

Local attractions

Beach days are just minutes away from Wavecrest – and with a local stretch going by the title of Four Mile Beach you’ll probably pick up the idea that there’s plenty of sand to select from. Hopetoun’s go boat launches for those that’d like to get out to sea, and there are plenty of places for swims, snorkelling, surfing, windsurfing and fishing (have a word on site for tipoffs of the top spots for salmon, tuna, lobster and other seafood treats). Bush days are just as easy – the 300,000 hectares of the Fitzgerald River National Park are a mere 15 minutes’ drive away. Buy a pass on site or join an organised tour to get out for bush walks, fishing and wildlife spotting; more than 200 bird species and 22 different mammals are among those to keep your eyes open for. In season, head to Cave Point for spectacular views of passing whales. For a little local history, take the half-hour drive to Ravensthorpe for the Dance Cottage Museum and a wander on the Hopetoun Ravensthorpe Railway Heritage Walk.
