  • Wineries 10 minutes’ drive; Mount Lofty Botanic Garden 20 minutes
  • Pick-your-own bush pitches on a working farm with alpacas and sheep
The kids will likely be very, very excited indeed if you book a break at Willow Glen Alpaca Farm, a rural South Australia campsite where they can get up close to the animals, pet then and feed them. Result: happy kids and chilled adults. With three bush areas for tents accessible only by vehicles with high clearance – among gum trees, near a dam across the Onkaparinga River or with valley views –  the campsite is on a 10-acre private farm in the Adelaide Hills. Ten minutes’ drive takes you to shops, restaurants and wineries in the popular tourist town of Hahndorf. This is off-grid bush camping with no set pitches, no electricity and no facilities, so you’ll need to factor in bringing your own water (although some drinking water is available on request), camping toilets and torches for getting around at night. Campfires are allowed for heat and cooking, and you can pick up delicacies to barbecue in Hahndorf (as well as some very decent wines). Two final practicalities: please take all your rubbish with you when you leave, and due to the presence of sheep and alpacas – as well as frequent kangaroo visitors – dogs are not allowed on the site.

Local attractions

Originally a German settlement, photogenic Hahndorf (10 minutes’ drive) is a pretty town with terrace restaurants lining its lively streets. You can go tasting at several winery cellar doors on the main drag, or book tours of the craft brewery and gin distillery. To sample more (non-alcoholic) local produce, head for the shop at Beerenberg Farm (15 minutes) to buy chutneys and preserves. If you’re visiting between November and April, you can also pick your own strawberries in the fields. After all that drinking and eating, you might like to discover the Adelaide Hills on foot; follow the Crafers Trail Head (20 minutes) to the observation platform atop Mount Lofty for spectacular views over Cleland National Park to the waters of St Vincent Gulf. Less robust walks might include an exploration of the colourful plantings at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden (also 20 minutes). If the kids haven’t had their cuteness quota with the alpacas back at Willow Glen, call into Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary (10 minutes) to feed orphaned joeys, cuddle koalas and encounter dingoes.
