  • Private Queensland lodges with Great Dividing Range views
  • A 90-minute drive from Brisbane and 10 minutes from Queen Mary Falls
  • Restaurant and bar on site, plus animal experiences and bushwalking
Family-owned and operated Bestbrook Mountain Resort offers traditional Australian farm-stay experiences including milking cows, making butter, billy tea and damper, wagon rides and whip cracking. Horse riding is the speciality here (an extra charge), so if it’s your dream to learn to ride, or crank up your skill levels, here’s your chance – and parents can lead ponies for younger kids. Along with bushcraft courses, you can join in twice-daily animal feeding at 8.30am and 4pm… as there are chickens, peacocks, turkeys, ducks, cattle, sheep and horses to get fed on the farm, the team are always happy to have a helping hand. Adventure seekers, family groups or the young at heart can all enjoy real Australian country hospitality at the licensed restaurant and bar. Enjoy a cold beverage at ‘beer o’clock’ on the Coach House veranda and you’ll have time to take in the spectacular mountain scenery. All this – and it's only 90 minutes from Brisbane. If you've come all this way only to discover you’ve forgotten something essential, ask the owners and they may be able to help. If they can’t, just west of here is Maryvale Road (five minutes’ drive) where you’ll happen on a handy general store – and if you’re still out of luck, then head for Warwick (25 minutes) for everything rom pharmacies to major stores and gas. This site is dog-friendly as long as your dog is controlled and does not bother other guests or the livestock. And you can be sure of a warm welcome from resident dogs Matty and Shiner, who will escort you to your lodgings and drop by regularly to make sure you are doing OK.

Local attractions

There’s plenty to do out and about pottering around the farm and enjoying the peace of the outback. Take a walk around the Labyrinth, swim in the saltwater pool or go rock-hopping in the creek. If you’re feeling more adventurous, hike or mountain bike up to the lookout (a steep route) and take in the sunset. Thanks to its remote setting, this is a great spot for stargazing at night, so back at camp, build yourself a campfire and cuddle up to watch the Milky Way glittering in clear skies above. If you’d like to explore further afield, Main Range National Park (10 minutes’ drive) is a bushwalker and birdwatcher’s paradise, with the chance to see rare butterflies and frogs and hike through rainforest. The Goomburra region of the park (40 minutes) has spectacular views of flat-topped extinct volcanoes, and Queen Mary Falls (10 minutes) has a panoramic circular walk through a lush jungle-clad gorge.
