Looking for somewhere well off the beaten track to stay awhile? La Bouganville is certainly fairly remote. Tucked away in Joskeleigh, 35 minutes’ drive from Rockhampton in Central Queensland, this sprawling trailer and tent campsite is set on a 70-acre farm with an additional 30 acres of wilderness and wetlands. There might be a lot of acreage covered in tropical forest here, but there’s only a handful of pitches, so you’re guaranteed peace and seclusion – even more so if you opt for setting up camp in the wetlands area, which is fenced off and full of wildlife. As this is proper wild camping, facilities only run to portable toilets; there is no drinkable water and no electricity so come prepared with everything you need, including bottled water, torches and spare batteries. It may be best to stock up on food and other supplies in Rockhampton on your way into La Bouganville, although there is a big supermarket at Emu Park (25 minutes’ drive) on the Capricorn Coast. While you’re welcome to bring your horse – please note, only by booking in advance – dogs are not permitted at La Bouganville as a variety of animals (goats, sheep, dairy cows, horses, donkeys, poultry, a pet pig and still counting) have free range across the land.

Local attractions

Learn about Central Queensland’s indigenous cultures with a visit to the heritage-listed Sandhills Historical South Sea Islander Cemetery, right across the road from the campground. Less than 10 minutes’ walk away, you’ll come across the Joskeleigh South Sea Islander Museum, a compact museum with displays highlighting the importance of native workers to the local sugar-cane industry. Begin your exploration of the geography of the region on wetland hiking and cycling trails through Keppel Sands Conservation Park (five minutes’ drive). You can organise sea-fishing charters at low-key Keppel Sands township (10 minutes), where there’s also a beach backed with grills for barbecues overlooking the Coral Sea. On family-friendly days out, you have a triumvirate of animal attractions to try: visit Koorana Crocodile Farm (10 minutes) to see crocs being fed, or head to Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary (40 minutes) for encounters with rescued kangaroos and koalas. For an introduction to more endemic animals, there are wombats, dingoes and endangered cassowary birds in spacious enclosures at Rockhampton Botanic Gardens and Zoo (also 40 minutes).
