  • Family-friendly holiday park edging Lake Hume in New South Wales
  • A 35-minute drive to Hume Dam; 40 minutes to Kurrajong Gap Lookout
  • Swimming pool, boat ramp and boat hire; grocery store and café
Situated on the shoreline of one of Australia’s largest lakes – in fact three times the size of Sydney Harbour – Ingenia Holidays Lake Hume at Bowna in New South Wales hits the spot with anyone keen to spend their holidays by (or preferably on) the water. Life on the holiday park revolves around water. Take time out to swim leisurely laps of the outdoor swimming pool, cool down at the water-spray park (operated seasonally) and then get down to some serious chilling on the sun deck. After more water-based action? Launch the vessel of your choice from the boat ramp and spend hours happily exploring Lake Hume by horsepower or oar speed. When it’s time to restock energy levels, prepare a grilled feast at the shared barbecue area or in the camp kitchen – there’s a kiosk for pantry staples if you run out of essentials. And if you’re avoiding any cooking, the park has got you covered at the (seasonal) Lakeview Café for daily barista-made coffee and snacks. Away from the water, there’s still plenty to keep kids busy, from petting the farm animals to playing pool or testing out the mountain-bike trail. Wherever you’re coming from, Lake Hume is easy to get to. The city of Albury (half an hour’s drive) has the nearest airport, with connections to major cities including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Local attractions

Fed by the mighty Murray River, Lake Hume is party-central for extreme sports from wakeboarding to water-skiing and tube-riding. For gentler pursuits, go paddleboarding, try your luck fishing for trout and cod, or stroll across the landmark Hume Dam (35 minutes’ drive), completed in 1936 and marking the boundary between New South Wales and Victoria. To see more of the lake, follow the scenic drive around its perimeter or head up to Kurrajong Gap Lookout (40 minutes) to see the remains of former gold mines as well as spectacular sunset views over the water. If you prefer to be on two wheels, follow way-marked trails in Mount Lawson State Park (an hour and 10 minutes) to dramatic waterfalls and Murray River viewpoints. To (hopefully) spot endangered wildlife, go bushwalking in Benambra National Park (40 minutes) and keep your eyes peeled for squirrel glider possums and turquoise parrots. Mullengandra State Conservation Area (half an hour) is also home to protected echidnas, wallabies and bats.
