Local attractions

Start your time here by taking a trot into Tocumwal town centre to visit the Old Woperana Working Farm and Animal Nursery and Chrystie's Museum, plus have a poke about at the foreshore market stalls. Paddle steamers putter up and down the Murray River in summer only, but the Big Murray Cod statue is here year-round (and for dessert you can scoot off to the Big Strawberry, 10 minutes away in Koonoomoo). Got the urge to get active? Swing your clubs over to the town’s 36-hole golf course, five minutes away and with some cracking river views, or head over to Lake Mulwala (35 minutes) for waterskiing, kayaking and splashing down waterslides (along with more relaxed cruises for folks embracing lazy days). Elsewhere nearby are hikes in the Murray Valley National Park (50 minutes’ drive), prickly days out at Cactus Country (20 minutes) and horse-drawn carriage tours of the Altina Wildlife Park (and hour and 45 minutes’ drive – tours by appointment only so don’t forget to get your name on the list before heading off).
