Campsites in Newgale: the top spots for a cracking coastal break

Pembrokeshire is packed with pretty beaches, but even so there’s something special about arriving in Newgale. This is almost as far west as one can go within Wales, and getting to your far-flung destination is a journey in itself. Once you’re away from the A40 it’s a most scenic drive, up and down through the hills along a twisting road.

And then, just as the teeniest hint of ‘are we nearly there yet?’ starts to creep into your mind… boom. There it is. A huge expanse of beach (two miles of it, in fact) bursts into view right there in front of you. It is, quite frankly, spectacular.

In fact it could well be the sort of place you’d think ‘yep, I’ll just spend the rest of my life here, ta’. And while we can’t help with that, we’ve certainly got a fab collection of Newgale campsites, cabins and cosy outdoor accommodation to give you a taste of that seaside lifestyle while taking in the fine fresh air that this part of the world has to offer.

Ready to see that sea view for yourself? Read on for our guide to camping in Newgale.

What to consider when picking your Newgale campsite

Top of the list of things to take into account should probably be location. This is a mighty pretty place but ooh, that wind can blow in off the sea at times. This makes it an absolute corker of a place for surfers to hit the waves but perhaps a trickier place for those trying to construct a tent within view of the coast.

If you’re planning a proper camping-in-a-tent type break, then, you might like to think about picking a campsite near Newgale rather than right there by the beach (you don’t have to go too far – just a field or two will do the trick).

Meanwhile, those checking out ideas for Newgale campsite to park their motorhome or caravan have other location factors to bear in mind. Remember that winding road? That’s one of the bigger ones around here, so if you’re in a larger vehicle it’s worth thinking about picking a place somewhere near the main roads and getting about by bike/on foot rather than setting yourself up for a tricky journey.

Location sorted, it’s time to move on to style and facilities. Here it’s up to you to choose according to your personal taste. Packing as much outdoor time as poss on a wild camping break, settling into a cosy Newgale camping pod or treating yourself to a slice of luxury with a stay in a bell tent, tipi, yurt or wigwam – it’s all up to you.

Bringing a pup along to check out the waves? Look for dog-friendly Newgale campsites. Family hols? Perhaps a play area or games room for those times when you’re not out and about. And it’s worth considering food too: supermarkets and pubs are sparsely scattered around this peaceful part of the world, so maybe a food shop and/or on-site café might be handy (or a position near a pub, perhaps).

Activities and attractions for your Newgale camping break

The sea’s the thing, obviously… especially if you’re planning to hit the surf. The waves here are pretty legendary within the Wales surf scene, so bring along a board or sign up to learn the requisite skills at one of the surf schools down at the beach. If that’s not your bag there are other watersports to have a go at, plus plenty of space to paddle, sunbathe or hang out with four-legged pals at the dog-friendly areas.

Elsewhere along the coast are options to ride horses through the surf, leap into coasteering days and take rambles on the Wales Coast Path. There are plenty of pretty spots to seek out too, from secluded coves to little fishing villages like Solva to the smallest city in the UK (that’s St Davids, a 10-minute drive from Newgale, but of course you knew that…)

Add into the mix boat trips to see the wildlife on Ramsey island, history-themed days at places like Carew Castle, natural wonders such as Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon and kid-pleasing outings to the likes of Folly Farm and Oakwood Theme Park and, well, yes, you might be back to considering moving in for quite some time…
