  • Family-run site in landscaped grounds on the edge of the Quantocks
  • A 20-minute drive from the Somerset coast; a mile from a local pub
  • Woodland walk, dedicated barbecue area and far-reaching rural views
Quantock Camping is a small site set over lovingly landscaped grounds on the edge of the Quantock Hills, which are accessible by road or a scenic footpath. This family-run spot is just off the A358, making it a prime position from which to set out on jaunts around Coleridge and Wordsworth country, visit National Trust properties or go fossil hunting along the splendid Somerset coast. It’s also worth taking some time to recharge on site, as this is something of a wildlife haven – a blend of wilder areas that have been left to nature and well-tended gardens that have been festooned with insect-friendly flora, including a bee-friendly garden. Woodpeckers, hedgehogs and a kingfisher are among the resident wildlife on site; at night non-essential lights are turned off for their benefit, and for guests to enjoy the star-filled skies. The onsite woodland walk is also on hand for dogs (and humans) to take a leisurely stroll around the grounds. Day-to-day necessities are sorted, with hot showers (including private outdoor showers that have proved a big hit), toilets and a washing-up area. Complimentary firepits and barbecues are also provided, plus the site has a barbecue hut with outdoor furniture, making planning an outdoor dinner easy (and highly recommended, given the gorgeous country views). If you’d like to sample some local Quantock ale, dog-friendly pubs are close by, including the one in the local village, which is a 20-minute stroll away via a footpath with stunning views. For supermarkets, shops and other amenities, head to Bishops Lydeard (five minutes’ drive) or Taunton, the county town (15 minutes). Please note that while children are welcome, there are no dedicated children’s activities or amenities on site, as Quantock Camping is more suited for those wishing to experience all that the natural surroundings have to offer.

Local attractions

The Quantock Camping owners are born and bred locals and are always on hand to help you plan the best places to visit based on your interests, so start your trip with a chat for some tips on things that might take your fancy nearby. Taunton (15 minutes' drive) is a hub of much Somerset-specific stuff: its farmers' market (said to be one of the best in the West) and several cider outfits should cater to your tastebuds, and you can also learn a bit about the local history at the Museum of Somerset. Heritage hunters can follow in the footsteps of the English Romantics at Nether Stowey (20 minutes), a handsome village where Wordsworth dwelled for three years at the end of the 18th century. Cleeve Abbey (20 minutes), meanwhile, is a magnificent monastery where much of the original medieval tiled flooring is still in place, while the National Trust's Fyne Court (10 minutes) has a lovely wild garden and arboretum to explore. Naturally you'll want to roam through the Quantock Hills during your stay, but it's worth allowing some time for the coast too: a 20-minute drive will get you to fossil-filled Kilve beach or the grand Dunster Castle, a little way in from Dunster beach.

The Hideaway shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: Everything! The Shepherd's hut was beautiful, clean and tidy with everything you could need for a short break. Both beds were made with good quality bedding and very comfortable to sleep in. Blankets were also supplied - not that you needed them in August! The hut also had a outdoor shower which was amazing, fully heated with space to keep towels and clothes dry. A BBQ and fire pit was also included. The owner came down on the first night of arrival to introduce herself and check everything was okay. The view from the hut was spectacular and the site was quiet. It was a beautiful location for a long weekend away.

Disliked: Nothing!

Owl shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything . We relax from the minute we arrive due to a very warm welcome. Karen and Jane make sure everything is covered and we're comfortable, from eggs to firewood. The huts are well planned out and so comfortable you don't want to leave the site.Every hut or lodge offers something different. The local walks and cycle routes have passed us by as we arrive and stay put, relax and unwind! The beds are to die for my husband and I don't move during the night. The wildlife is incredible. We had great tits nesting and fox cubs playing! The night sky superb of stars, satellites the moon and we saw fireballs!!! Can't wait to go back..

Disliked: Going home. Having to work.

Woodpecker cabin

Liked: Great location in beautiful country, with walks out of the door and onto the Quantocks. The site itself is almost a garden - beautifully planted and with big old trees and wildflowers. I was in a tent and had an exceptionally quiet and pretty pitch. The shepherd hut and cabin were all warm, cosy, big enough and well-stocked with cutlery, crockery, pans, fridges and microwaves. It was great to have barbecues ready to use. The showers were hot! The managers live on site and were extremely helpful and friendly. We all enjoyed our stay and said we will return. While there is a main road nearby, it was generally quiet to inaudible.
