  • Luxury glamping near the Dorset village of Stourton Caundle
  • North Dorset Trailway 10 minutes’ drive; beaches about an hour
  • Beds with real mattresses; village pub a three-minute walk away
On the outskirts of Stourton Caundle village, surrounded by the splendid countryside of north Dorset, Starlight Glamping is an intimate family- and dog-friendly site that will suit those who are looking for a peaceful holiday with a few luxury touches. You’ll be staying in spacious five-metre bell tents with interior lighting, and sleeping on real mattresses; no need to schlep bed linen, pillows and duvets from home, as they’re supplied by owners Debbie and John. Each bell tent has outdoor seating and fairy lights, so you can linger outside of an evening in a whimsical setting. The North Dorset Trailway (trailhead 10 minutes’ drive away), which stretches for about 14 miles along an old railway track, can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback. Alternatively, you could spend a day on the links at Sherborne Golf Club (20 minutes), with its 18-hole course, or go angling at Todber Manor Fisheries (15 minutes), where 11 lakes over a 20-acre area are home to carp and catfish. The Dorset coast and swimming beaches like Bowleaze Cove are less than an hour away. On the other hand, you might just want to stay on site and engage in nothing more strenuous than the five-minute stroll to the local pub (less if you cut across the field), in the village. A local supermarket in Stalbridge (five minutes) sells sensibly priced groceries and quality produce from over 100 local growers, makers and bakers.

Local attractions

Spread over 35 acres, Alners Gorse Butterfly Reserve (10 minutes’ drive) sits in what was once a royal forest. Today, the blackthorn and gorse thickets punctuating its grasslands attract large populations of butterflies and moths, plus birds like woodpeckers, nightingales and kestrels. Sherborne Castle & Gardens (15 minutes) was built in the 16th century by none other than Sir Walter Raleigh. In addition to elegant rooms filled with period furniture, artworks and decorative arts, the property is renowned for its grounds, landscaped in the 1700s by Capability Brown. On the western edge of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the hilltop market town of Shaftesbury (25 minutes) has far-reaching views of the Blackmore Vale. You can pretend to be in a famed bread commercial on cobbled Gold Hill lane, visit the remains of an abbey destroyed by Henry VIII, and stroll through streets lined with independent shops and restaurants.
