  • Peaceful and back to basics retreat in a scenic rural setting
  • A mile from Sturminster Newton and 30 minutes' drive from Dorchester
  • Walking paths from the site and soft play within five minutes' walk
If you like your Dorset camping home to be remote, rural and mighty peaceful – but within easy reach of beaches, towns and miles of countryside rambles, The Homestead Camping Site is the one for you. Just pitch up and camp here on a wide open grassy field, on a back to basics site in quiet green countryside where you and yours can make your own amusement in these roomy surroundings: a bug hunting or nature spotting expedition, perhaps... a wander into the Blackmore Vale (with dog, is poss) using one of the several paths leading direct from the site... or a long lazy evening by the barbecue coals idly plotting what you might fancy doing around Dorset the following day. Which is rather a lot. The Homestead's setting just outside Sturminster Newton is half an hour's drive from the splendid old city of Dorchester (yes, Thomas Hardy land), 20 minutes from Shaftesbury (that of the high hill) and 40 from the sandy beach and world-famed harbour at Poole. On days you don't want to stir even that far, a soft play centre is five minutes' walk away to get the tiddlers tuckered out at – all the better for the grownups' long lazy evening by the barbecue coals later. Shops, pubs and a Monday market are all at Strewminster Newton, a mile away.

Local attractions

Those of a certain age might like a trot along to Shaftesbury and Gold Hill, the setting for Ridley Scott's Hovis ad where the knackered bakery boy pushes his bike all the way up the slope to then whizz delightedly down. Also in Shaftesbury are splendid views of the Blackmore Vale (yes, from the top of the hill) and the  Gold Hill Museum – yes, also at the top of that hill... Literary types and Thomas Hardy fans must surely visit Dorchester to see his former home Max Gate; it's well worth a day in town after that to potter around its museums including the Roman Town House, Dorset County Museum, the Tutankhamun Exhibition and – if your offspring are now revolting – the dinosaur museum and the Dorset Teddy Bear Museum, For family days, Longleat and Monkey World are within 40 and 45 minutes, Lulworth Cove and Swanage within 40, and the New Forest within an hour. And travellers of an especially immature disposition (hurrah) should also enjoy a chuckle at the giant naked chalk man of Cerne Abbas, 25 minutes' drive from The Homestead.
