  • Small-scale family-run site with scenic Devon views
  • A 10-minute drive to Bigbury beach; 20 minutes to Salcombe
  • Pub and award-winning seafood restaurant within walking distance
You’ll have the seaside, the South West Coast Path and the whole of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at your disposal when you stay at Higher Easton Farm Campsite, a lovely little spot just outside Bigbury and about 15 minutes’ drive from Kingsbridge. This is a most handy location for exploring this stunning stretch of the Devon coastline: it’s a two-mile trip to Bigbury beach (for a surf school, kayak hire and instruction in the art of paddleboarding) and there are lots of other fine spots within a 20-minute drive, including Salcombe, Hope Cove and Bantham and Wonwell beaches. All of these are of course linked by the coast path for scenic hikes, and there are more trails half an hour’s drive away in Dartmoor. And the owners quite rightly note that it’s also a handy location for some great Devon eats: the award-winning Oyster Shack is a mile away, and there’s a great fish and chip shop on the seafront in Challaborough (two miles away). Closer to home, it’s a five-minute walk to the local pub or the well-stocked village store, where you can pick up picnic supplies or bits to go on your barbecue. As you’d imagine, there’s some fine scenery around here – and with far-reaching views from the site you can take in a fair amount without moving from your pitch. It’s worth staying awake past sunset too, as the stargazing tends to be pretty good on a clear night. Pitches at Higher Easton Farm are simple in style, but have access to showers and proper toilets.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Nice and secluded with lovely views. Had the whole site to myself! Hazel was very friendly and helpful, pointing me in the direction of a good curry! Facilities are basic but do the job. Would stay again

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great big field, amazing location and very helpful hosts! We really enjoyed our stay!

Disliked: Toilets were clean but very small and near each other, one sink with cold water. Made morning a little bit uncomfortable when everyone rushed to use them. It was not obvious where the shower was but I didn’t dare to go where I thought it was. For one night it was not a problem and we enjoyed our stay anyway!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay. Stuart said he had a lovely chat with you and wished you had said you didn't know where the showers were because he would have happily shown you. Best wishes Hazel

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Family run field, friendly and very helpful owners. The field had an almost wild camping feel to it with the convenience of toilets and showers. If we will go that direction in future we will definitely stay there again. My wife and friends with young children were very happy as well.

From the manager: We look forward to seeing you all next time! Cheers, Hazel and Stuart

Disliked: Noisy campers in nearby tent at night

From the manager: Thank you for staying with us and thank you for leaving a review. I am sorry the noise of the other campers drifted to your tent. We are normally a really quiet site, if you do stay with us again we will make sure no one pitches their tent near yours as I do appreciate what you are saying. Glad you enjoyed it here and liked the showers. Best Wishes Hazel

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked: Stuart was very friendly and helpful. You camp around the edges of a very large field and it is very peaceful and quiet. There is a very good pub a short walk away with great food. The toilets and the showers are basic but fine. Only one other camper there while I was there for 2 nights in August. Very enjoyable.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The owner was welcoming, we got directions text to us but sat nav brought us right past. He showed us where things were, which way the wind was blowing and said pitch wherever you like. My son wanted a simple wild camping experience but with a ‘proper toilet’ and to feel like we were the only ones there. That’s exactly what we found. The field is spacious and very chilled and even though it is on a working farm, much to my son’s pleasure, it didn’t smell like it 👍.

Liked: We were greeted upon arrival by the owner Stuart who was extremely friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The site was very well situated for our touring needs and everywhere we wanted to visit was close at hand. After reading some not so favourable reviews we decided to book a table at the local pub The Pickwick and we were pleasantly surprised, the food was good and the staff were very friendly and it was not expensive. The facilities at the campsite were adequate.

Disliked: The facilities could were very clean but could do with a little bit of love and updating.

From the manager: Thank you for leaving a review. We are what you call an old fashioned camp site we have flushing loos, semi outdoor showers spacious pitches and fabulous views. Thank you for leaving a review of The Pickwick Inn that is useful for other campers. Best Wishes Hazel and Stuart

Local attractions

If you’d like to dabble in some watersports, you’ve come to the right area – Bigbury (10 minutes’ drive) has a sheltered side and one with wilder waves so it’s a place where you can learn to surf or paddleboard your way across calmer waters. Rather stick to dry land? There’s a golf course in the village too. While you’re in Bigbury, take a trip over to Burgh Island, famed for its wildlife and its links to Agatha Christie. You can walk across the causeway at low tide, or take a ride on the sea tractor at other times. Elsewhere along the coast, make a stop in smart Salcombe (20 minutes) for a tour of Overbeck’s (National Trust) and a sip of the local gin, or venture to Dartmouth (35 minutes) to see its ancient castle and stroll around the harbour. For a family day out away from the beach, try Woodlands Family Theme Park (25 minutes), Dartmoor Zoo (half an hour) or the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth (40 minutes).
