  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutesā€™ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutesā€™ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutesā€™ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. Thereā€™s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of courseā€¦ but not before kicking back for a bit on siteā€¦ Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the siteā€™s central and easy to reach: itā€™s just off the A30, and thereā€™s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Yve M. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Small, immaculate and peaceful campsite, with very easy access. Showers and toilets are modern and spotless with a hairdryer that was free to use and one bonus was that they were only closed for an hour for cleaning. The whole site was well set up, including the the chemical disposal unit which was modern. There is a lovely enclosed dog walking area with a couple of benches with views over Dartmoor. The WiFi was the best that we'd ever had on a site, it was super fast and reliable. There is a small shop in reception with a few essentials including wine. We enjoyed a walk to Fingle Bridge and back through Drewsteignton, despite some steep hills. Next time we will walk to Castle Drogo or maybe catch the bus into Exeter. We thought this site was very good value for money.

Peter L. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Fully-serviced hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site is a little gem. Well placed to visit Exeter, Okehampton and all of Dartmoor. There is good and spotless toilet block and a little club house with a pool table. The team looking after the site do a great job and were lovely. With lots of sites asking twice the price they're worth, this site stands out as really good value for money.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the canā€™t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) ā€“ donā€™t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devilā€™s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the cityā€™s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around Englandā€™s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
