  • Scenic adults-only dog-friendly site in Dartmoor National Park
  • Haven for hikers and bikers, 20 minutes from Exeter city centre
  • On-site shop, information centre and secure off-lead dog area
Escape from messy desks, busy inboxes and fume-filled commutes with a peaceful fresh-air stay among grownups only at Barley Meadow Touring Park, a dog-friendly site under five minutes’ drive from the Devon village of Crockernwell. As it's in Dartmoor National Park, this is a top spot for hikers and bikers with a yen for exploring far-off places: the 117-mile Two Moors Way (which stretches from Ivybridge to Lynmouth) passes 10 minutes’ walk from the site, and National Cycle Route 27 and the Granite Way walking trail can be joined 15 minutes’ drive away in Okehampton. Closer to home, you can stroll next door to the farm shop to select goodies for your dinner. There’s plenty more to investigate around splendid Dartmoor, but of course… but not before kicking back for a bit on site… Stock up on snacks in the on-site shop (open subject to demand) while letting canine chums run off-leash in the dog area, or plan outings and pick up ideas for local walks, activities and visits in the little information centre. All sound a bit too rural? Never fear, as the site’s central and easy to reach: it’s just off the A30, and there’s a bus stop right outside the site entrance for trips to Exeter and Bude. Eco-friendly drivers can charge their electric vehicles using the EV point on site too.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Size of campsite and location. Facilities excellent.

Disliked: Right by a road which I thought might be a problem but actually was not.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your great review. With regards to being near the road You had booked a Grass Pitch, but sadly you were too big. After speaking to you about this and it being Bank Holiday weekend, the only Pitch that we had available was an Aires Roadside Pitch which is closer to the road, however we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope to see you return. Best wishes from us all at Barley Meadow.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Quiet campsite, dog friendly with an off lead area, the Bothy with a pool table, board games and books was a nice addition. There was also a fridge/ freezer to use. Toilets were clean and well maintained.

Disliked: Not a dislike to the campsite itself but we were unable to go to Fingle Bridge due to recent dogs dying after visiting the area. We just drove to other places and enjoyed walks a bit further away.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for your kind review. So with regards to Fingle Bridge, there has been an incident where a dog has very sadly passed away after eating something down there. We do tell our guests about this and it's very well sign posted down there. It is under investigation to find out the actual cause. We are sorry that you didn't get to see how beautiful it is down there. Maybe if you visit us again you will get to experience Fingle Bridge in it's glory. Best wishes from us all at Barley Meadow.

Local attractions

Devoting a few days to rambling explores of Dartmoor National Park is a must hereabouts, with plenty of stunningly scenic spots to include in itineraries. Start with the nearby Teign Valley and the can’t-miss Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in south-west England) – don’t forget a camera to snap some shots of the spectacular White Lady waterfall and the Devil’s Cauldron whirlpool. There are more ways to explore Dartmoor National Park than on foot or by bike too: adrenaline junkies can try out whitewater kayaking or canoeing along the River Dart, or head into Okehampton to sign up for scrambling through gorges. History buffs are well served around these parts too: jaunts into Exeter come with possible pitstops at the city’s famed cathedral, medieval guildhall and Tudor-built House that Moved (that one deserves a quick internet search), while rural travels lead to stately manors including Powderham Castle, Castle Drogo, Killerton House, and Buckland and Buckfast abbeys, all within an hour's drive. Poke around England’s last working water-powered forge at Finch Foundry and visit the Museum of Dartmoor Life near Okehampton, or step back into the present day with some kid-friendly fun at Crealy Adventure Park or Diggerland Devon, both around half an hour from the site.
