  • Family-friendly wild camping site five minutes' walk from Stratton
  • Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches 10 minutes' drive away
  • Base for surfing, hiking, coasteering and paddleboarding
If you’re heading off for a Cornish break, it’s a given that much of your time will be spent digging up seashells on the beach and tackling the boisterous surf – so what could be better than a family-friendly site within 10 minutes’ drive of the beach? The Hideaway is a cosy three-acre refuge run by a friendly local family who'll point you in the direction of local surf schools, paddleboarding, and coasteering, all within 10 minutes' drive of the site, so you can dive headfirst into the local surf with confidence. This is a basic site with no electricity, so you can truly shut off from the digital world and embrace wild camping in its full glory. Peek outside your tent and you may just find a pack of pheasants shimmying their feathers or an ambling roe deer passing through. The local beaches, Summerleaze and Crooklets (both 10 minutes' drive), take you away from the throngs of the Cornish tourist go-tos, so you won’t need to get territorial over your patch of sand. You can stroll straight into the Cornish countryside from the site, too, and join the riverside Seven Bridges route to tick off its coveted seven bridges (well, now six) as you go. The seven-mile route ends at the village park, so kids can blow off any remaining steam on the swing set. Handily, the site is a five-minute walk from the local village of Stratton, where you can grab Cornish cream and strawberries from the shop or simply stock up on supplies. There are a couple of pubs in the village too, and there are plenty more seaside pub haunts along the beaches, where you can sample local ales and rest your feet.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything was really good, nice area, clean hut, I was skeptical with the compostable toilets but they were really clean. Showers were warm, had more amenities than we thought like stove, cooler box and cutlery which is good. Host was really nice too. The whole place was really peaceful. When walking back one night the stars in the night sky were the brightest I had ever seen. 10/10.

Disliked: Nothing about the place was perfect in every aspect. Only one thing was the distance from Bude. It was 40 minutes walk which wasn’t bad just abit too far if you want a beer in Bude. It was £10 for a taxi back but there is a couple of decent pubs in Stratton.

Local attractions

Five local beaches – sound good? The closest of the bunch is the white-sand Summerleaze Beach (10 minutes’ drive), which has a free sea pool, topped up partly by the tide. There are several surf schools here, where kids can sharpen up their surfing skills, or catch their first-ever wave. Over at Crooklets Beach (10 minutes), families can inject more saltwater into their veins with a go at coasteering, paddleboarding and sea kayaking, or test their grip strength with rock climbing or abseiling at Shoreline Extreme Sports (10 minutes). Those who want to stick to the land can saddle up with horse riding at Broomhill Manor (five minutes), or whizz around the countryside on a Segway at Bude Segway and Outdoor Pursuits (10 minutes). Golfers won’t have too far to look, either, as the local town of Bude (10 minutes) has both 18-hole and nine-hole golf courses, and easy peasy mini-golf for all the family.
