  • Small, friendly and rural site just outside Stithian village
  • Family and dog friendly, on four acres of countryside
  • Ladies' and gents' showers, springwater standpipes and guest kitchen
It's all as natural as possible at Penhalvean Pottery Campsite just outside Redruth: this Cornish countryside setting is so handsome the site owners sensibly leave it to do its own thing. Grass is kept neatly mown so guests can pitch up with the minimum of fuss, but everything else around these four scenic acres is left alone – ensuring a wildlife haven and secluded rural setting for all sorts of roaming and play. And walkies: Penhalvean is firmly (well behaved) dog friendly and the owners will happily share details of local walks and dog-friendly beaches. Penhalvean is a small, friendly and relaxed site on the edge of a Stithian village, almost exactly halfway between Cornwall's north and south coasts (you'll need to arrange days at both...). The Stithians Lake watersports centre – and pub serving food – is within half a mile and another pub open for lunch and dinner is within walking distance. Portreath is the nearest beach, just under six miles away. The site is gently sloping, with a good range of amenities including toilets, wash basins, chemical disposal and ladies' and gents' showers with free hot water. There's also a small kitchen with a microwave, kettle and washing machine; two standpipes with fresh springwater are in the camping field, and the Stone Circle firepit is your nightly spot for communal campfires.

Local attractions

Spectacular surfing beaches are all around the Cornish coast, but watersporters seeking activity with the utmost ease should start off at Stithians Lake within easy walking distance, for watersports as well as fishing all year round. Windsurfing, sailing, rowing and kayaking are all up for grabs on the water; on land, take the trail around the lake for nature spotting and birdwatching from one of the three hides. Heading northwards, Portreath is a popular place for kayaking and surfing, and like most in the area is lifeguarded in the summer months. If you're up for a (somewhat steep) hike, take the South West Coast Path east from here to Porthtowan, or west to Godrevy via the famed lighthouse, or use Portreath as a starting point for scrambles around the old mines of St Agnes. Also going north from the site, Newquay and St Ives are each within 35 minutes. To the south, fab Falmouth is about 15 minutes' drive away: arrange at least a couple of days here for trips on the Fal river, idle times on the beach, a trip to the National Maritime Museum and a cold pint of Cornish cider in one of the old and excellent pubs around the quay.
