Your own corner of the Cornwall countryside for a cosy getaway with your other half? What a lovely idea – and exactly what you’ll get when you stay at Metta Fields, a rural spot about five minutes’ drive from the centre of Hayle. There’s just the one bell tent here, set up in a private garden as a space where a couple can have a good bit of peace and quiet during their break. The bell tent is suitable for adults on their own or accompanied by one small child. Well-behaved dogs are also welcome (the site has its own dogs and chickens and there’s livestock nearby so any visiting dogs will need to be kept well under control). It’s a pretty place indeed, with the tent tucked away among greenery in your own garden space, where you can relax with a glass of wine by the firepit or get a meal going on the barbecue. Inside the tent there’s an alternative way to cook, in the form of a pizza oven – and even if you don’t fancy a pizza, it’s a handy way to provide a bit of warmth on a chilly night. The tent has been nicely kitted out with things like rugs, lighting, storage and all the bits you need to make your morning cup of tea. You’ll be sleeping on a blow-up double mattress (just remember to bring your own bedding and pillows, as these are not provided). Close to the tent is a compost toilet and a sink for drinking water and washing up, but please note there are no showers on site here.

Bell tent

Liked: Great little set up in a stunning location. We have had five days in the bell tent which we found to comfortable and well equipped for the camping experience :). There are some amazing walks all around and if you head up the lane and up to the top of the downs the views are panoramic from one coast to another. Please remember due to the location you will need to drive or get the bus to local amenities / attractions etc....unless of course you like walking.. We had a few issues with our car whilst staying and Lesley was extremely helpful offering assistance with ordering shopping in if need be and also left us some lovely fresh eggs for breakfast. All in all a nice break only spoilt by the car issues...

From the manager: In my defence to my so called rude behaviour. This guest booked then thought it ok just to add a van with friends in, not part of the booking.I had to chase for a very small payment , and there dog releaved it's self out side my gate to which I picked up and said nothing , so I think my tolerance was quite good and I also offered a free nite stay for being rude over the situation. Hope this balances the review. With Metta Lesley

Excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Local attractions

This is a countryside spot but the coast isn’t far off – including some top spots like the beaches of Hayle and Carbis Bay (both five minutes’ drive) or Gwithian (15 minutes). Heading to the south coast, you can easily get to places like St Michael’s Mount (15 minutes) or Praa Sands (20 minutes). If you’d like to continue west, it’s about a 35-minute drive to Land’s End. Staying closer to home, St Ives (10 minutes) is a fine place for a day out, especially for arty types who can visit Tate St Ives and Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens (15 minutes) is another good one to add to your list of cultural visits. If it’s the gardens that get your vote, you may also like to take trips to National Trust - Trengwainton Garden and Trewidden Garden (both 20 minutes). There are plenty of wilder landscapes around too, perhaps best explored with a walk on the South West Coast Path or seeking out a stroll around one of the area’s ancient landmarks.
