  • Peaceful site seven miles from Brighton and half a mile from trains
  • Carefully maintained to avoid overcrowding
  • Picnic tables, small café/bar and play area on site
Like Topsy, it just growed…The Barn Caravan Park at Lancing, West Sussex opened in 2003 and has been growing and welcoming guests ever since. Fret not though if big sites aren’t your thing: this is a peaceful medium-sized site and is carefully maintained by owner Joe to avoid overcrowding even in busy periods. Hide yourself away here or take a trip to Brighton about seven miles away; several West Sussex beaches are even closer to hand. Pitches are on grass and come with access to The Barn’s five toilets, baby changing, showers with lashings of free hot water, and a cold water beach-type shower for outdoor suds. There are picnic tables for guests to use, and a good play area with full-sized football goal, swings, ball game area and a climbing tower slide. A handy little extra is the licensed café/bar, which sorts guests out with drinks and ice creams throughout the summer. For getting off site, buses and trains are within a mile; Lancing train station, with a supermarket outside, is about half a mile away. Eating out can be done in style at the smart Art Deco restaurant at Shoreham Airport, a mile away from the site. You're also welcome to bring your own barbecue to the site.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location - despite being surrounded by a residential area, the camping field was pleasant and peaceful with easy access to seafront a few hundred metres away. Friendliness of the owner.

Disliked: Toilet facilities (2 toilets and 2 showers) were adequate but basic - sinks in block took a while to drain and facilities were not the cleanest I have seen. Only 2 washing up sinks- one with hot water and only one draining board between the 2. Didn't realise that our online booking only gave us access to 6 amps of electricity but, to be fair, we were offered a higher supply but we had already set up.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very clean site. Shops and beach front not too long of a walk, makes it an ideal location for us. Childs play area in the middle of the green. Two toilets and two showers in the women’s. It was always clean and always had enough toilets rolls etc. Also, there was some cleaning equipment we could use if needed which was a lovely touch. Plugs in bathrooms for hairdryers etc. We also liked the fact they had music/ radio playing in the bathrooms. Planes would go over every now and again which was lovely to watch, none went of an evening so not noisy. Lovely cafe on site with hot drinks, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. Would defo recommend and come back. (Not sure if there was WiFi as we didn’t use this, so scored a 1 on that basis).

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This is a fab campsite, quiet and relatively small, very safe for the older children (aged 8+) to play without us needing to be on hand as we can see them at all times. Location is excellent - 20 mins easy walk to the supermarket, 10 mins walk to the beach with the excellent Perch bar and restaurant about 15 mins away. The campsite was clean, toilets were small but adequate for the number of pitches. The shop was fantastic (alcoholic slushies were a winner!) and the owner, Joe, was friendly and helpful.

Disliked: Honestly nothing to dislike about this site.

Liked: Spotlessly clean, well maintained site. Space used efficiently, not overcrowded and centred round a nice play area for the kids. Heated toilet/shower block with plenty of hot water. Nice, friendly owner. In walking distance of Lancing beach. Freezer available for refreezing ice packs Plug sockets available for hairdryers, kettles, charging phones, etc.

Disliked: Nothing - it was an excellent site.

Local attractions

Beaches, beaches, beaches… the nearest beach, South Lancing, is within a short walk, with the beaches of Worthing and Shoreham-by-Sea each two miles’ walk from here. Or head west along the coast to the flumes of Littlehampton’s Harbour Park or to the bountiful resort of Bognor Regis. The town of Lancing is less than a mile away from The Barn with a nature reserve, Lancing Ring, to its north and restaurants and shops at which to fill your boots and empty your wallet. Worthing is also well worth a look as one of the biggest towns in the area – and the former home of Oscar Wilde and Harold Pinter for those who like their literature. There are a couple of hundred listed buildings in the town to make your way around as well as the biggest museum in West Sussex, an undercover shopping centre and, er, a haunted oak tree. Along the coast to the west there’s cracking Chichester with its Norman cathedral, festivals and shops; Fishbourne Roman Palace, the biggest Roman home in Britain, is just outside the city. Going inland, nature lovers, sightseers and adrenaline seekers will find heaps of things to do: the market town of Horsham and its birds of prey centre; horse-riding, hiking and historical artefacts in the South Downs National Park; the RSPB reserve of Pulborough Brooks and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust wildlife haven Arundel overlooked by Arundel Castle. Sprogs have plenty of choice too: take them along to West Sussex’s farm parks and play centres, to Chichester for mountain boarding (not biking) or for a puff on the South Downs Light Railway.
