  • Very peaceful camp site with only red kites and rabbits around.
  • A 30-minute drive to Ludlow; 15 minutes from Tenbury Wells shops
  • Peaceful grass pitches on a hilltop site, with real-ale pubs nearby
If you’re after total peace and quiet, this could be the spot for you. Hanley Orchards is a small and friendly wild camping site in the little village of Hanley Child in Worcestershire – and well-behaved dogs are welcome too. If you potter around quietly on site, you’ll probably catch sight of the resident red kite circling overhead. With glorious views out across the Teme Valley from the hilltop camping field, you’ll really get that off-grid, alone in nature vibe (although a toilet block is part of the deal too). Out and about exploring the Teme Valley (there are routes for walkers, cyclists and drivers), you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views across to the Welsh Marches and the rugged hill of Hay Bluff. There are cute, half-timbered towns like Ludlow to explore, and an abundance of defence castles along the Welsh borderlands to investigate. Secluded Hanley Orchards may be, but it’s actually only 10 minutes’ walk from the village with its selection of excellent foodie pubs, one with a microbrewery producing Worcestershire real ales. At 15 minutes' drive, the market town of Tenbury Wells is your closest bet for shopping, with delis and fishmongers as well as a decent-sized supermarket.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The views, relaxed atmosphere, very friendly owner, clean toilets, shower was a surprise, quiet site. Great base to explore Tenbury (15 mins drive) or Ludlow (30 mins drive). Room for children to play.

Disliked: Slightly sloping pitch and long grass. Farm dogs bark sometimes so if your children are nervous of dogs be aware but they are not on the site, just next to it and are not a problem.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Absolutely nothing.

Disliked: Phoned owner upon arrival to be told they weren't open yet and just park anywhere. Owner turned up about 4ish asking for payment in cash. No indication on website stating cash only. Unfortunately neither myself or husband had cash. Offered to transfer payment via bank transfer but was refused so we had to leave. Toilets are disgusting

From the manager: Very sorry the customer was not happy, the camp site is always open so not sure on that one unless the gate was shut whilst we moved stock, i agree it should be clear on Pitchup that we are cash only as our internet is very tenuous and mobile signal is poor, i have emailed them to that effect, we are a working farm and regularly work 12 / 14 hour days so we have few site rules and rely on common sense, toilets are quite small but are always cleaned twice daily so perhaps we clean them three times, the customer did however stay overnight and on hookup and also burnt a hole in our picknik table with a portable barbeque and then left without paying, perhaps Butlins would be a better option. I would point out that we are a semi wild camp and as such our facilities are limited however we offer peace and quiet, magnificent views, extensive walking and wild life, our prices have not been increased since 2019 so very good value. We try and help our customers in anyway we can if we are not home then just ring. Regards Neil

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The facilities were excellent, advertised as no shower on site so was pleasantly surprised to find one. All the facilities were very clean and the lighting outside the toilet was very welcome especially during the night. An area provide to exercise dogs separated from the pitches, so no need to worry too much about dog mess. Site was easy to find and plenty of room for each pitch.

Disliked: The only negative I can give is the shower is in the toilet, therefore when shower is in use the toilet is unavailable. Not too much of a problem and the facilities more than make up for it.

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Amazing views. A get away from it all back to basic site.

Disliked: Would benefit from another toilet. The dog walking field was the old orchard on sloping long unmown grass / nettles. would benefit from a mown path for dog owners to walk on whilst four legged friends run free. Would be even more amazing if other campers were respectful of others excesssive noise from radio or barking dogs and not turning it down to respectful volume or telling dogs to stop. It wasn't the total quiet site that we were hoping for .

Electric optional grass motorhome pitch

Liked: The views are stunning from the field out to the Malvern Hills. There is a huge big fenced in dog field for dogs to run off. There is a shed with chemical disposal, a shower and a toilet. Not too big so you don’t feel rammed in like sardines. Finally - a really helpful owner who will tow you out when it rains all weekend and you can’t get out of the field!! Nice distance from Ludlow and tenbury wells for nice little mooches. We sat down on the banks of the river with fish and chips whilst the dogs paddled. It was lovely.

Disliked: Nothing really bar mole hills. But there is nothing you can do about that, there were just a lot of them.

Local attractions

If you've brought the dog, the National Trust-owned Brockhampton (20 minutes’ drive) has wonderful walks (lovely in spring when the bluebells are out), while Witley Court and Gardens is a spectacular ruin surrounded by formal plantings and woodland paths. It’s also worth checking out Ludlow (30 minutes), with a half-timbered, medieval town centre packed by pubs and restaurants, and riverside Bewdley (25 minutes) has pretty Georgian houses, traditional pubs and arty shops overlooking the Severn. Here, you can jump on a steam train for an expedition on the Severn Valley Railway between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth. You’ve had your fun, so treat the kids to theirs. You can’t go wrong with the high wires at Go Ape Wyre Forest (20 minutes) or spending the day at West Midland Safari Park (45 minutes), spotting lions and zebras in drive-through compounds and riding coasters in the family-friendly Adventure Theme Park. Another hit with the kids might well be the annual Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb (15 minutes), if you’re here in August.
