  • Family-friendly Staffordshire site by the river Trent
  • A 15-minute drive from Stafford and a mile from the Shugborough Estate
  • Easy access to canalside trails; five minutes' walk from a farm shop
Get away from home and back to nature at The White Lodge, a family-run site by the river Trent and right on the edge of Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With 10 acres of well-kept, secure grounds, this Staffordshire spot scores top marks for its access to scenic paths and bike trails, its location a mile's walk from the National Trust's Shugborough Estate, and the sheer peace of the place. Great Haywood village, where there's a garden centre and a convenience store, is half a mile away. Still closer to base (around five minutes' walk away) is the neighbourhood canalside farm shop and café, making it simple to source fresh produce or barista-made hot drinks while away from home. To sample the fully-fledged floating experience there's a narrowboat hire centre a few minutes' stroll away. Bring a rod and/or binoculars if heading down to the Trent and canal – river fishing is available hereabouts, and birdlife abounds along these peaceful stretches of water. The pitches are also home to plenty of nature and have substantial tree coverage for those sunny days when all you want to do is chill out in the shade. (The grounds are flat, so there's little risk of rolling downhill mid-snooze and waking up on someone else's pitch…). Head here if you're partial to a sizzle on a summer's afternoon – barbecues are allowed as long as all flames are kept well clear of the grass. Well-behaved dogs are also encouraged to tag along.

Local attractions

The edge of Cannock Chase is a couple of minutes' walk away, meaning there's lots of opportunity to get out on walks and mountain biking jaunts. A few more unusual activities are also within reach – treetop zipwires and obstacle courses at Go Ape Cannock (15 minutes' drive) and Clip 'n Climb Stoke's climbing wall (15 minutes) are both recommended. If you'd rather ascend skywards in a more leisurely fashion you could also book a hot air balloon flight (five minutes). For kids who'd rather investigate life at ground level, Amerton Farm (10 minutes) should supply a good few hours of animal-based entertainment. Next door, carry on with rides aboard the small-scale trains at Amerton Railway (10 minutes) or spend a spell at the village's hands-on arts and crafts centre. For a really special treat, you could also up sticks and make for Alton Towers (35 minutes), where a theme park, spa and golf course should keep almost all comers happy.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Friendly staff, flat pitch, reasonable facilities. Appeared to have reasonable expectations regarding noise etc.

Disliked: People in neighbouring caravans did not observe time limits for noise - they were noisy until approx. 1am

Lovely site just noise at night and lack of hot water let it down.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: This was are 2nd time visiting this site. We loved are last stay and was excited to stay again with friends. The location is brill lovely shops near and pub. Great walks looking at all the boats and shrubby hall. The couple that own this site are so nice and friendly and it really has been made a family friendly site. There is a park and football pitch, witch is Brill as I hate mine playing near people's tents and caravans. Also thought about where it is too as its well back from cars and tents etc.Toilets are nice and close but not too close love how different they are. Had Brill area for pot washing. Had a nice big pitch even got a picnic bench too. Could not fault that. Had a lovely peaceful night Friday everyone stuck to the no noise after 11pm (one reason why we came back having young kids) but pity that was not the way for the Saturday or Sunday. Saturday it was gone midnight before someone stopped shouting "go on Daniel" and f##ing this that and other was not nice to hear at all, there was so much noise I could not believe it. I understand a little noise you always get that one family but this was loads the whole camp site could hear it. Then Sunday we had karaoke well that's what it sounded like. Am all up for fun and a few drinks, but this site was advertised as family friendly this was not on. Nothing was done to even dull the noise down. Even someone pitched up late quiter (understand this noise) but that was 10mins not hours and hours of it.

Disliked: I like the showers I love how different they are but there has to be a better way of getting hot water. As once a few had had a shower or washed pots that was it for hot water. And if your in the new showers and some turns tap on or flush the toilet the water stops all together. Could do with more too 3 fields and 2 female showers 2 male. Also no where to put close when in showers. But just a hot shower would of been nice.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Absolutely beautiful site, on arrival was greeted by a lovely man who talked us around the site and welcomed us. As we weren’t locals we spoke about nearest shops and places to eat which was very helpful. The site was spotless and well kept, and we had no issues at all.

Recommend to friends Visit again

A well located and spacious site, will definitely be back next year.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Excellent pitches. Great play park . Fantastic area right beside the canal in open countryside, but only 20mins from Stafford. And the FRIENDLIEST and most helpful owners we have ever met

Disliked: Limited showers. But this was far outweighed by the good points
