  • Luxury family-friendly activity resort in the Shropshire hills
  • A 10-minute drive to Shrewsbury; castle, dungeon and river cruises
  • Pool, pizzeria and adventure playground, fishing and kayaking on site

Henry IV went to war near here for control of the English throne and it's still a spot worth battling over: lush green hills, clear rivers jumping with fish, wild forests and ruined forts make Shropshire a jewel in England's outdoor crown. You're in for a royal treat.

At LOVE2STAY they combine outdoor enjoyment with indoor comfort. The safari tents are palatial affairs with outdoor hot tubs on the private sun decks, firepits for feasting alfresco and fully-equipped kitchens for dining under cover. Sofas to sink into in the living areas are matched by the roll-top baths and power showers in the bathrooms. And underfloor heating. Not even Henry IV had that.

They'll deliver hampers of fresh local produce to your door (if Sire commandeth it) or you can fill up on the fab wood-fired pizzas from the restaurant (takeaway on offer too).

The real question (as grappled by many a medieval monarch) is what to do with all your time. Fish the lake or kayak it? Swim in the natural swimming pool or get muddy on the assault course? Get tranquil in the bee garden, stretch yourself with yoga or steam in the spa? The kids will love the massive adventure playground and the bushcraft walks, not to mention paddleboarding on the lake. Get together in the evenings for outdoor movies in the cinedrome.

Local attractions

If you do make it away from the fab spread of activities on site, then a trip to medieval Shrewsbury (10 minutes' drive) comes fully recommended. A pretty town of tiny winding streets steeped in history with grisly tales on offer at the Jailhouse, cracking views from the 11th-century castle and riverside picnics an absolute must in the local favourite, Quarry Park. Explore the Severn some more with a river cruise afterwards.

For those with restless boots, there's a fine circular tour of the town and three larger walks of the surrounding countryside, taking in battlefields and bandit hideouts, ancient forts and nature reserves. You can hire bikes back at the site to visit ruined abbeys and stately homes on designated trails.

Bridgnorth (half an hour) is well worth a trip, especially for train enthusiasts. The clifftop rail cars glide you up the 111-foot sandstone cliffs slowly enough to savour the views over the Severn Valley. Another sedate if slightly noisier way to see the surrounds is on the Severn Valley Railway, whose old steam engines puff 16 miles from Bridgnorth down to Kidderminster through cracking fine English countryside, tooting at suitable intervals to everyone's delight.
