General

  • Comfy pods on a quiet site in rural Shropshire
  • A half-hour drive from canal rides, steam railway and Horseshoe Pass
  • Five minutes' drive to pub and 10 minutes to shops

Castle Farm Holidays have a lovely patch of green fields outside the hamlet of Dudleston, gazing onto an old church spire. It’s border countryside, neither English nor Welsh, but Shropshire’s own.

The pods are little works of wonder, so cosy you can stay in them all year round. They all come with electric fires, kettles and microwaves, and three of them have daytime sofas that convert into beds, sleeping up to four. They’re all secluded and quiet, but comfortably close to the shower block which has a wheelchair-friendly wetroom.

There’s a splendid pub with food five minutes’ drive away near St Martin's, while shops and big supermarkets are close by in Ellesmere, 10 minutes' drive away. The town’s a handy base for exploring the local area, whose various meres formed a string of lakes and wetlands when the last Ice Age ended. There are pleasant walks around and beyond the town, along the canal and through to the meres.

Birdwatchers flock to Wood Lane Nature Reserve (20 minutes), which draws legions of long-legged water birds like redshanks, whimbrels and green sandpipers. Ellesmere's island (mysteriously called Moscow) is home to a colony of herons, whose soap opera of matching, hatching and chick feeding is beamed live to the big screens at the visitor centre: who needs TV...?

Fantastic place to stay with brilliant facilities. The pods are very clean, modern and comfortable with a brilliant shower block close by. This has wash up facilities and a lovely little lounge. The pod we stayed in had electricity, microwave, fridge, heating and a sleeping platform with mattresses. All we needed was bedding and cooking utensils. Plenty of space to sleep for 2 adults and 2 young children. The site has lovely views and plenty of space for the kids to run around in. The owners were very friendly and helpful. It feels like the middle of nowhere but it’s not far far towns and attractions. I couldn’t recommend this place enough!

Comfortable, clean and peaceful 04/08/2018

Everything really. The site was small, quiet and clean. The pods were set between the fields and the woods; just far enough apart, sat on short trimmed grass at the end of a new gravel drive.
The toilet block was close, lit up at night, clean and modern with plenty of facilities for the number of Pods present. There's a little lounge attached with plenty of leaflets for things to do.
The owners were pleasant, helpful when we needed them and absent otherwise.
This isn't a big site with entertainment or things to do. It's a comfortable, peaceful place to put your feet up after a long day exploring the beautiful countryside and villages around.

Amazing place. We hired the whole of the site for a birthday celebration and it was simply perfect. Helen the owner was a pleasure to deal with from start to finish, was lovely meeting her and her two dogs :)

Loved how each pod had a kettle and fridge, plenty of sleeping space. The hot tub was the icing on the cake.

Would love to return and try the new addition (caravan).

    Excellent local area

Directions

If guests have St Mary’s Church, Dudleston on ltheir lefthand side, go down the lane, past Church Farm (connected to the church). Go down the hill and around the bend; the next lefthand driveway takes you down to the pods. If you get to a whitehouse and driveway, you've gone too far: the site is the last property on the lefthand side of the lane. If you go down a hill and across a ford and get to a junction, you've also gone too far.

Local attractions

A half-hour drive across the border gets you to Llangollen, a lively spot lent added drama by the Berwyn mountains behind. Sitting on the River Dee, it's a great place for a meander down the canal (you can even hire a horse-drawn one for an added sense of history). For more vintage experiences, take the steam railway, whose engines puff you 10 miles along the river to Corwen.

Heading back further in time, Chirk Castle (20 minutes) sits on a hill surrounded by parkland right by Offa's Dyke; within its grounds is the Great Oak of the Gate of the Dead, a still-thriving tree planted to mark the site of a battle in 1165. Dinas Bran (30 minutes) is another fine fortification, high in the hills and mostly ruined, and with cracking views. These are rivalled only by the ones at Horseshoe Pass (30 minutes), an old mountain route whose vistas are complemented by a café at the top doing bacon sarnies.

Also half an hour away, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a mere 38 metres high but you'll feel suspended in thin air as you walk or boat across this narrow 'stream in the sky' built across the Dee in 1805. For watery thrills of another kind, the Blue Planet Aquarium (an hour) has Europe's largest collection of sharks and perhaps the only collection you can dive in and say hi to.
