  • Peaceful adults-only bell tent glamping two miles from Burford
  • A 10-minute drive to Bibury; half an hour to Oxford
  • Farm shop, barn-style restaurant, brewery and gin distillery on site
A glamping site with a farm shop would be a fine thing, right? And how about a glamping site with a farm shop, a restaurant, brewery, smokery and gin distillery? It’s a tasty offering indeed at adults-only Oxfordshire spot Red Sky at Upton Downs, Cotswolds… This is a site that may well seem like a little slice of heaven for food-loving folk, whether you’d like your meals cooked for you or prefer to do your own alfresco dinners. The farm shop on site is particularly well known for its smoked meat, game and fish (all smoked on site), and it’s also stocked with a good range of cheeses, fine wines and other treats. No need to lug around a stove to cook on: there’s a barbecue outside each bell tent ready to be fired up. If the best kind of treat is one that someone else has produced, take a table at the Firehouse, which serves up barbecued dishes in a converted barn with picnic bench seating and a gorgeous bar area. Or maybe you just fancy a drink or few? Sample batch-brewed beers at the site’s taproom, or peek into the gin distillery. Building up an appetite for all these delights should be simple around here: the glampsite is just on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for walks and days out, and just off the A40 for easy access to lots of lovely locations. Burford (aka ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’) is less than two miles away. Days out, dinners and drinks can all be slept off in the comfort of peaceful bell tents provided with beds, lighting and outdoor furniture, and with access to shared bathroom facilities.

Local attractions

Start your outings in Burford (two minutes’ drive), to see its medieval church and ancient houses, take a walk down to the Windrush river and see if you can squeeze in a little more food in one of its teashops. Bibury (10 minutes) should certainly be on the list to visit too: little has changed since William Morris called it ‘the most beautiful village in England’. Lots of other lovely towns and villages are nearby: perhaps head to Bourton-on-the-Water (15 minutes), Stow-on-the-Wold (15 minutes) or Cirencester (20 minutes). For something a little larger it’s half an hour to Cheltenham or Oxford. Other days out nearby might include a visit to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (five minutes), Cotswold Motoring Museum (15 minutes), Batsford Arboretum (25 minutes) or the stunning grounds of Blenheim Palace (25 minutes). Or, if you feel the need to let off some steam, head to Cotswold Water Park (half an hour) for watersports and a chance to bounce across the inflatable obstacles.
