  • Farm hideaway adjacent to an operational airfield in Lincolnshire
  • Next to RAF Coningsby; a 10-minute drive to Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre
  • Plane spotting on site; farm sho and pub within five minutes’ drive
Vulcan Rest is a red-hot spot for plane spotters and war history lovers. A rural Lincolnshire hideaway on a working farm, it has a very big surprise next door: the operational airfield at RAF Coningsby, which is home to Typhoon jets, Tornadoes and, once upon a time, the legendary Vulcan bomber. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire, Hurricane & Dakota) is still operational so you may well spot them as they fly over the site on a weekly basis. You can also tour The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (10 minutes’ drive) and check out the Dambusters Memorial in nearby Woodhall Spa. Simple on-site amenities include a fresh water supply and a single toilet and basin. To keep you fed and watered, the local farm shop is stocked with essentials for full English breakfasts as well as barbecue goodies and picnic treats – they even offer a delivery service to the site so you don’t have to stir once you get comfy. There’s a 15th-century pub with a suntrap beer garden a mile away from the campsite, plus shops and takeaways, while Tattershall (10 minutes) turns up several restaurants and other places to eat. Families can let off steam on the inflatables at Tattershall Lakes Water Park (10 minutes), and there’s fishing on an adjacent lake. For dreary days, the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Very remote and peaceful site, just what we were looking for over Easter weekend. It's a very basic site just as it's described, so if you're looking for modern amenities, this isn't the site for you but perfect for self contained units. Due to the amount of rain in the past few weeks it was quite boggy, but we took traction mats with us and we had no problems. Had a couple of nights with clear skies, low light pollution so great for star gazers like us.

Disliked: Not a dislike as such, but a sign pointing to the site on cross keys lane could be helpful.

From the manager: Good Morning Lynne, We are pleased to hear you had a lovely stay with us over the Easter weekend. With regards to having a sign on Cross Keys Lane, this isn’t the access to the Campsite. The access is via the gravel track off the B1192 Langrick Road inbetween the Airfield and the Old Bomb Dump as stated in the text message we send everyone the night before and also on Pitch Up. This is the easiest access point to reach Vulcan Rest Campsite, anyone who has followed their satnav via Criss Keys Lane has always ended up at different farms so this is the reason for the directions, not to mention it is a working single track lane for the Farms surrounding the Campsite. We look forward to welcoming you back. Kind Regards Dawn Vulcan Rest

Liked: It was a quite site

Disliked: This is a very basic site as it says on the web page. having said that I at least expect toilet paper and hot water to wash hands and sometihing to dry my hands on, in the one and only toilet. An honest relpy to questions. we went 3rd november 23 I enquired if the pitch was water logged and was told it was fine. however when we came to leave we were stuck. having tried for an hour while waiting for help to come we just had to give in and wait for a freind of the family to get us out. Having got home and messaged the site owner that we were safely home. she told us the that was good as we would have had to wait for her farther to get home from Newcastle if the friend was unavailable!!! not the way to run a site in my view. would not go back.

From the manager: Hello Sue, Thankyou for your review. It does list in the Utilities section that we do not have Hot Water onsite. We do not supply Toilet Paper for hygiene reasons or Hand Towels, we do expect that you will have these in your own accommodation for your own personal use. Yes we did have Campers in from the Monday all week, there were no issues when they came to leave the Campsite on the Friday, My Father had advised you when you had arrived on the Friday, that you may be better off parking on the hard standing area as it was forecast rain again on the Saturday, which you ignored. I visited the Campsite myself on the Saturday afternoon whilst it was raining and the ground was getting soggy, I did ask you again if you wanted to move over to park up on the hardstanding, to which you replied it would be ok, you were leaving tomorrow anyway. In hindsight, it would have been a sensible option for you to have followed our advice and parked on the hardstanding areas when advised to have avoided the events that followed. Kind Regards Dawn Vulcan Rest

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Easy to find site, using a short farm track off the main road. Small and very quiet. Single toilet that reminds us olds of the outside loos at home back in the day! Clean and usable with a sink and mirror. Various bins for all your waste. Fresh water supply. Good sized and level pitches (essential for a tent) with electric hook up if required. Sited alongside the runway at Coningsby, one of only two front line fighter bases in the UK. Thoughtfully, there is a platform constructed to give an elevated view of the Typhoon fighters on the runway. The owner is very communicative and will answer all your questions. We were sorry not to meet her as we were on a one night only late arrival with a very busy schedule. This site was lovely and peaceful to enjoy in the evening with lovely countryside views to wake up to. Plenty of local pubs in the area that serve excellent meals at very reasonable prices. Can wholeheartedly recommend Vulcan Rest as a base for anyone visiting the area and is a 'happy camper'!!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing to dislike from our point of view. If you don't like the sight and sound of fast jets or Britain's military aviation heritage (617 Dambusters Sqd?) then this campsite probably isn't for you!! Go and book a few nights at Centre Parks......

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The amazing position for viewing RAF Planes flying in and out of Coningsby. It even has its own raised viewing platform. In between flights it is really tranquil. The pitches are level and spacious, it is a very basic site with just a loo, waterpoint, chem toilet point and bins. EHU was fine. There are walks from the site into Coningsby which has a few shops and pubs. We also visited Thorpe Camp nearby which is an excellent museum.

Disliked: Nothing. It is basic and we expected that and it was acceptable. Nothing for kids on site except watching the planes.

Local attractions

Hot foot it to The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (five minutes’ drive) for guided tours of the flight hangars, and visit the solemn Dambusters Memorial in Woodhall Spa, which commemorates 617 Squadron. Petwood Hotel (both 15 minutes) was the squadron’s Officers’ Mess in World War II, and you can see a dummy bouncing bomb in the grounds. Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre (10 minutes) relates the story of the Dambusters. Other war-themed museums in the area include the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes), Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre (half an hour) and the International Bomber Command Centre (45 minutes), so there’s lots to keep historians busy. Travelling with the kids? They can let off steam on inflatables at Tattershall Lakes Water Park (10 minutes), and head for the fairground rides at Skegness and Ingoldmells (both 45 minutes), the dune-backed sands at Mablethorpe or the quiet beach at Sutton on Sea (both 55 minutes). You’re covered for rainy days too: the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.
